Hi,

I'm after a bit of advice on fitting a consumer unit to new extension. The existing house C.U is a 6 way Wylex 100A (non-RCD protected with 2 rings and 2 lighting circuits) with two spare ways. I was hoping to use a 63A MCB in one of the spare ways to feed a new C.U(via earthed metal conduit) in the extension which is to be a kitchen/Diner. From the new C.U I am feeding a cooker circuit, ring, lighting x2, heat/smoke detectors and a feed to a shed. However, it seems you can only get a maximum 40A mcbs for single phase boards and I would presume, even with diversity applied this wouldn'nt be large enough to feed a seperate C.U with a cooker circuit and ring etc. I was looking to use a dual 63a RCD board in the extension and the reason that I'm not just replacing the old C.U is that its current location is not very accessible.
P.s There is 63A RCD shower enclosure fed from supply side of the existing C.U.
Any suggestions of a better way of going about this would be much.appreciated.
Cheers.

Is it your property or a clients? I would SUGGEST a new board. If it's not accesible to go in the same place what about changing the tails to longer ones and extending the cables to a convenient place? Unfortunately a job like this has so many variables , without seeing it , it's really difficult to offer any definitive advice. If there's anything specific I or anyone else can maybe help with please feel free...

I agree, replacing the existing board would be best. Ideally you should run the new circuits back to the exisiting board (once changed) unless it's going to be totally seperate to the rest of the house.
