UK Fitting new ceramic hob

Hi, I’m after a bit of advice please, my ceramic hob has cracked so I’ve bought a new one with the intention of fitting it myself. The new hob has now arrived but it’s got a cable already fitted which has 4 wires, L1, L2, N and E.

The cable fitted to my old hob has only three wires, is it possible to fit the existing 3 wire cable to the new hob? The diagram inside the book for the new hob also shows three wires.

I have added some pictures, the first three are the existing hob and the rest are the new hob and booklet.

I’ve previously replaced plug sockets and light fittings myself, but if it’s a case of wiring the new hob into the wall then I’ll be leaving that to an electrician.

Welcome to the forum mate.

We were just talking about this at work today.
One of the guys sons has just bought a hob that has 4 wires.

L1 & L2 wire to the L
N wires to N
E wires to E

It is kind of opposite to how you put a link in when you only have 3 wires for 4 connections. It allows you to split the load when on a multi phase installation

Don’t quote me on this but I would just link the 2 lives together

In some EU countries the maximum size of mcb allowed in domestic installations is 16A. so hobs and cookers are split across two linked mcb's. Usually both on the same phase but can be across two phases.
In my opinion this is much better than the UK way of sticking all the rings onto one 32A mcb.
So as above, link L1 and L2.

All the cables are the same size.
The Live cables are basically in parallel, shouldn't the Neutral cable be equal size to the two Live cables in parallel? Or am I having a brain fart moment...

i'd say use the brown (L2), blue (N) and E. ignore the black.

Some of the hobs I've fitted, provided links for the hobs terminals when connecting as single phase.

Do are EU member countries have 3 phase domestic supplies? Not that will matter anytime soon.

I thought that, however if the N is able to take the 25A the manufacturer says it can draw then all is fine.
in theory you could reduce the size of the live conductors to 1.5mm as each can only draw 12.5A but the N will have to take the full 25A if on a single phase. I think for simplicity they have just over sized the cable.

Looks like the cable is 4mm csa conductors ?

From the label in your photos it clearly shows for 240v you connect the conductor market L2. As Tel’s deduction.

Label also shows 240v L1 to Neutral.

looking at that diagram for 2nd time, it would appear that both L1 and L2 should be connected to L, for use on 240V single phase. see also post #4. so it appears that both black and brown should be commoned to L supply.

Same question was asked for the same hob here:

Brought a new hob Russell Hobbs (RH60EH402B) because the old one was cracked. New one seems to have four wires, but the old one only had 3. I think I need to pull out the oven to get access to the box that the wires feed into. Do you think I will I be able to connect the new hobs wires easily...

In the 2-phase hobs that I've seen, there is usually a link pin when installed on a single phase connection.

Is the manual not clear? Strangely, this model is not listed on the Russell Hobbs site.

Probably says “recommended” to be installed by a qualified electrician.

Brown and black to live, blue to neutral. Green/yellow to earth.
Don’t shorten the cable, or cut off the crimps off the end of the conductors.
