Looking at a nice bit of work this morning which is a CU move and change.

At the minute, the CU is burried in the back of a kitchen corner base unit, along with meter and cutout! Customer isn't willing to pay to have cut out and meter moved, but want the CU moving up into a nice and roomy 600 wide cabinet.

The tails are going to be chased into the wall so they run within zone between the meter and new CU position and to be extra sure no one goes through em at some point I'm covering them with 3mm steel plate which will be earthed.

So what i'm asking is, would you bother installing say a 60amp fused isolator for the tails, as the run is no longer than 1800mm or just extend the tails to the ne CU position

Basically anything distance under 3 metres you can be pretty sure the DNO fuse will cover the tails.

You could try giving them a ring and if you finally get through to someone who will have a clue what your talking about, you can ask if they will cover your tails.

IMO I think your OK.

Went to look at a CU change yesterday and the "tails" are 10mm T&E, running about 5 meters. Me thinks those need changing!

Not really a requirement for additional overcurrent protection as you're within the 3M 'rule of thumb'. That said, a simple isolator may be of benefit for everyone.

Being devils advocate, would you be better putting tails in a bit of scaffold pipe. Protected from all ways then not just the obvious.

Agree regards isolation.

Only problem with the scaffold tube idea is its only a single brick wall.

I could line the bottom of the chase with a sheet of steel too though
