It all accords on your work ethic, if you are on the phone every chance you get them you will be an electricians mate for ever, (making tea and running errands) if you are someone who genuinely wants to improve and knuckle down to learning then you should be able to pick up the basics in a couple of months in which case the "Electrician" will want to keep you on and happy, involving you in testing etc, its up to you and your own ability and enthusiasm.
Saw a video of one serial blogger who was buying his new apprentice a set of tools, the way this young lad came across left me perplexed, he had no idea what any of the electrical tools where for, if you where going for an apprenticeship surely you do a bit of homework about your chosen profession before you start. ?
