Intermediate switching

I have recently wired a light with intermediate switching.
when I turn on the light at one switch its fine, but when I operate the next switch it goes off! Then if I go and operate the next switch it comes on! But then if I go back to the first switch and operate that one the light goes off! What's happening?

I don't mind paying for quality Trev.

I would prefer to pay for a nice sirloin steak that I can eat than a cheaper rump steak - half of which I can't get my teeth through !!

Not so. On a 2 way it is possible to have the switches wired so that both up or both down is on or off, or the 'messy' way where no matter how many time you walk back and forth switching you cannot get them 'synchronised'.

I must be missing something? Lets say they're both down and the light is off, you switch one up to switch the light on (one switch up and one switch down) then go to the other switch and switch it up to switch it off (now both are up) or are you talking about something else?

The French and Germans have it right. As many P/B’s as you like linked to a latching relay. The light’s are off, press any button and they come on, press again and they go off.

That sounds far easier to wire - just run each cable from the switch to relay, presumably in the CU, instead of having to worry about running your feed into the end and getting a 3 core between them all.

The great thing about the system is it only needs a twin to each switch point.

No real nead for a drawing. As has been said, the relay fits in the CU. It has just four connections to the relay. Live, Neutral, Latch and switched live. The live is taken to each switch point and then returns to the latch terminal. In effect a row of normaly open P/B's in parallel.

Mikes used them, I cant remember who made them, he may tell you.
