I recently bought a megger 1730 and i`m getting some weird earth loop readings using the no trip function. I know they can be a little higher at times when taking a "no trip" reading as my old 1552 was always a little higher too but these seemed well out...

I only got the meter this week (Used from ebay, but in as new condition). I did a few tests around the house and all seemed fine, Then today I had to use it to test a rewire I did in Belfast and thats when I noticed the odd readings..

ZE: 0.28Ω (which I did think was a little high, but within the limit for a PME all the same)
R1+R2 0.17Ω
Earth loop 1.03Ω

This is just one circuit, but they all seemed to give high readings.. I didn`t bother shorting out the RCD`s to take high readings and compare.. It was a friday and I wanted to get home ;)

I had a google in work and some where saying it could be the 500Ma leads and others saying the batteries etc and I did notice the batteries where near dead.. When I got home I charged it and took a few readings around the house and all seemed fine, ZE 0.11Ω , R1+R2 0.41Ω, No trip earth loop 0.61Ω ...

Strange.. anyone else having these problems with the 1700 series Meggers?

The meter is like new, infact there is not a mark on it,.. It didn`t however come with a calibration cert so I`ll need to go in and get checked but just concerned I may have bought a duff one...

When the batteries become low then the readings provided by these meters are not reliable, I would expect this is what happened.
However it is possible that there was a high resistance RCD or MCB in the board that was bumping up your readings.
As you say the no trip test is somewhat variable anyway.
