Multifunctional Testers - Which one have you got and how long has it lasted?

Fluke 1664FC superb tester. Used various testers over the last 30 years but I’m happiest when using my trusted Fluke. Plus they have the best cases in my opinion.

My trusty Megger 1552 died last Saturday, keeps on blowing the fuses and tripping RCDs on the no trip setting. I was due a new tester after nearly ten years of arduous service, opted for Metrel in the end:

It has it's quirks but don't they all.

I've used Metrel in the past and found them to be comparable to Megger. Yes the leads are on a moulded plug, the RCD test sequence is the wrong way round etc but they are quirks rather than problems.

I haven't fully abused it yet but give it time... ?

Used to use a robin KTS1620 but the wouldn't do circuits with RCD's so I got a used Metrel Eurotester some years ago and it has been no trouble.

Megger 1711 here, only had it a month but then I bought it based on the fact that this beast passed down to me by another spark still works. (Plus bonus Robin IR tester in stylish leather case)

Megger 1553 from around 2008, never missed a beat and Megger 1720 (Vintage unknown but I've had for 3 1/2 years now.) It was saved from ending up in a skip as it wasn't carrying out Zs tests quick tinker later and a little drop of solder and it works like new and at calibration the results are spot on every year.
More personal preference really but the meggers are unbeatable in my book.

Fluke 1662, Does me very well, probably doesnt do as much testing as some on here do, but when I am working i does a bear minimum of high current and no trip loop impedance test every day

Alot say they like the fluke case, the hindge broke in no time on mine and i dont rate it that much, but I am used to using Pelican case and flight cases

I drop mine off to the place myself, As i hear what your saying about courier

Martindale/instrotech in Watford do my calibration and its only a 30mins drive away so works out well

I like to take it in to a local wholesalers for their on-site calibration days feel its a safer option.

Love the Fluke case, about the most hard wearing case I have seen for any MFT.

I'll second that Mike, after owning a martindale ET4500 for 2 years, not liking the soft case but liking the tester I ordered a Fluke case for it. I paid over £40 just for the case but I'm glad I did now. I have no idea why other manufacturers don't do something similar.

Di-Log MFTs come in a hardcase similar to Fluke's.

I looked at that, very similar if not the same only in black. Strangely though on Ebay the Di-Log was £ 68 compared to £ 45 for the Fluke.

They're very similar, but I never looked to see if the case was available separately.

Ebay pricing is often dictated by what the market will permit, rather than retail prices. While some very good bargains can be found, it can the case that ebay works out quite expensive.

Edit: Di-Log case £39.95 from testermans, but currently out of stock.

I don't know why the price is so high other than demand, they do seem to sell well, but they are good for the job. I'm sure there's a market there to exploit.

Megger 1741 here. Had it 3 years. Positives- no problems, and it would have paid for itself had I bought a rechargeable MFT earlier! Negatives- the soft plastic display is very easily scratched and marked. One of our PAT testers is the megger 150R and that has a tough glass-like display, why couldn't the MFTs have this? In hindsight I should have got a screen protector of some sort.

Previously, Megger 1553, 2008-2018. In that 10 years it had 2x new replacement ports (where you push the leads in), and a replacement LCD screen. Finally in 2018 it developed some sort of fault, as if the fuse had gone but it hadn't. Nobody seemed keen on repairing it so had to get a new one sharpish. Never ever got around to using the bluetooth function!

Before that, robin separates, the continuity/IR having the analogue dial. Miss that!

i've got that same robin IR/cont. tester. had it for 30 years.

Just got my MFT1741-BS back from Megger upgraded to the MFT1741+ (and calibrated) so was using my old MFT1553 whilst it was away. Still working well, but much slower on no trip loop tests and particularly on RCD tests. Also the auto power off seems to happen quicker on the MFT1553 than the MT1741.

my 1553 is slow on no trip efli tests.i usually use the 2 lead hi current test L-E shorted at furthest point. meter across the (switched off) rdc/MCB. boom boomif i forget the short when re-energising.

I have a Megger MFT1731. Had it about 6 years. Had to replace the rechargeable batteries once, other than that, I love it.

first one lasted 6 years, this one has started playing up after 4 years.

just bought a new one first time rather than try to get fixed, but may try to get this one fixed this time round.

I had a MFT1502 from 2003 to 2020. It was still working but fancied an upgrade so sold it on eBay and got a 1721.

Think Metrel have won the right to be respected. I have one and sang it's praises on an earlier post. Like the price too.
