just to let you know that i worked for a well established firm who are NICEIC registered and they NEVER used nic certs or cert numbers (simply generated his own), they had custom ones designed by the boss, although nic did try to pressure him into using them he told them he was not going to and pointed out that his forms are compliant with BS7671 and asked if they would like to loose his annual subscription..... they soon backed down.

Good on him, when already paying hundreds or thousands a year you shouldn't be forced to buy a set of certificate or report numbers.
