Not just a Noob - A Total noob

Hi all.

Brand new to all of this so please go easy.

Im 31 and spent 10 years as a Police officer but left due to the way the job was going.

I never listened to my old man before he died about getting a trade behind me and now I find myself wanting to learn.

I have always been interested in electrics/electronics and am keen to start now.

My question is. How does a chap of my age start?

I have googled allsorts but only find 4 week courses for £4000 upwards and they all seem too good to be true and as i am too old to be on an apprenticeship I don't know where to start.

Sorry for the long intro but help would be appreciated.

Domestic installers part p course then a scheme, NICEIC, NAPIT ETC as a domestic installer. you can say you're fully qualified and competent in as little as 4 weeks.

Do the full monty mate don't do the part p courses you will not get the full under pinning knowledge required. There really is not a quick way you have to do the time.

try find a local firm that will take u on, go collage do courses work hard read books etc etc yep spose u can do a six week wounder course telling u will be erning 40k in three months tell u this the grass isnt always greener the other side of the fence ,,,goodluck with it tho pal.

I think I will need to labour for someone for a bit and get my --- into college which is a little daunting since i haven't really studied since school

welcome along. you could try to get into college on the 2330 as it has been extended. try getting any experience you can on site

the 2330 is fairly flexible towards all mate tbh. they quite often run it on a night time aswell. just to let you know they have just recently extended the deadline of entry to the 2330 so you may well be told you can`t enrol on this by a receptionist that might not know of the extension. good luck with it and feel free to pm me if you need any help or advice

i have just remembered an article in professional electrician 5 years ago showing a 70 odd year old guy doing the 2330 there is hope for us all then as for the gcse requirements they can let adults sit a college aptitude test

Why did you give up as a police officer? I know an electrician who has just joined the police force a couple of week back!

To become a graded electrician you will need

City & Guilds 2330 L2 and 3
City & Guilds 2357 NVQ L3
17th Edition

and any other quals that can make you stand out from everyone else e.g P.A.S.M.A, IPAF

I am now 38, I have just finished my Level 2 2330 at college. I started 2 years ago on a night course and was lucky enough, to do my last year on a day course full time (3 days a week). Now I at the stage where I am looking for electricians mates jobs, anything that will only help me with my 3rd year. I have bought and read books, which do help, bought as much stuff as I can from ebay, revision notes have been a really great help.
I came from a sales back ground and decided I wanted a change 3 years ago, I am glad I did it and wish I had of done it sooner...I have a final year to do and I'm done. I have a few other course I need to do but it won't get in the way of working....

I had a 40 year old on mine with no previous electrical experience...He went straight onto level 3

Let me get this right then; you left one of the last remaining jobs, where you'd have a bit of job security - and all of the official/unofficial perks that come with it, to go into one of the most unpredictable job industries out there? Ummmm....
