I am involved in a bathroom makeover, part of which is replacing the existing power shower with a like for like replacement (Mira Event XS manual). The shower is installed in a purpose built apartment block which is 20 years old. There is no RCD/RCBO installed in the supply to the shower. The shower is connected to the apartments H&C tanked water systems & has no internal heater (13amp) supply just the power motorised pump. The existing installation has the usual multi switch consumer unit, which supplies a sunken wall mounted on/off switch. Which RCD/RCBO should I fit?

how is the power to the pump fed? is it on a socket RFC or dedicated radial?

Blimey Stearman a difficult one to answer, depends on what type of CU you have installed, what size CB protects the shower circuit? you need to remember any wiring either feeding equipment in the bathroom or any cables passing through that bathroom must be protected by an RCD

To note here the OP has no electrical experience so suggest this is moved to the DIY section but in the mean time respond with that in mind.

The OP's understanding of RFC, Radial etc may be very limited ... we will have to wait for a responce IMHO

I am a retired Refrigeration Projects Manager with 50 years experience in the commercial & industrial refrigeration industry. I had City & Guilds qualifications in Refrigeration & Electrical subjects before I went into management in 1969, where I handled new store & re-fits for M&S & Wm Morrisons PLC. So although not up to speed on the current situation, 3 years ago I did convert a Renault Trafic to a camper van including wiring to the 17th edition. The situation is, I have a company installing a new bathroom in my apartment, one of their tasks is to replace the existing shower like for like. The current installation is 20 years old & there are no RCD's installed.

why would you fit a metalclad RCD FCU? just replace the existing FCU with a RCD one.

Stearman65, Telectrix has a bit of a sense of humor and it is a running forum joke about people from Merseyside. Please dont take any offence, it is meant in jest. If you feel offended by it, we can remove the post if you want? Welcome to the forum, we do have a little bit of banter on here.

Telectrix, play nicely with the new members lol. Not every one from Liverpool are like the Boswell family out of the sitcom Bread.

OK, who changed my avatar picture???? GMES by any chance? I'll get my own back!

Cheers for the Info it helps tailor the responses as we often can use terminology that might be over the head if a member has no electrical knowledge and unless we know this it can drag the threads out.... I think from post 09 you have the solution you maybe looking for although to comment the company replacing the shower should themselves be fully knowledged and compliant in the regulations if they are just replacing like for like... they will be required to ensure the circuit they are connecting to is at least safe for use unless they install a pump complete with a plug top which limits their responsibilities.

The company installing the new bathroom had a full spec' from me, but now the job is nearing completion I'm beginning to think they will be leaving the existing shower wiring as it is, which I believe is incorrect.

BTW I'm a member of an un-related forum that is dying on its feet due to abusive posts.

lol.... I think you have joined at the best possible time ...as a forum we have had our wings clipped to ensure its not going in such a direction..out of interest can you hint without spelling it out which forum you left.

@OP. as paul said, my post was meant in jest, and not in any way meant to be offensive. i hope you take it in the spirit it was intended. i have over 39,000 posts and not one has ever been taken as offensive.

Tel, everyone knows you and this has been viewed as banter only. It is an on going forum joke but a new member did not see it that way due to not knowing about it. Thread has now been cleaned up, hope the OP does not feel offended because no offense was ever meant to be.

Paul - I see this "complaining" as an extension of the blame culture. Rarely do people like to admit they are wrong, especially on a forum.

OP - why don't you allow the bathroom company to resolve this and also insist on the Part P notification too? It should be a walk in the park for a decent, experienced company!

The OP hit the report button, posts have been deleted and an explanation to the OP has been given. Telectrix is in no trouble what so ever. Matter resolved and everyone is happy. Lets move on.

Hi I haven't left the forum I mentioned, last year it was getting 100+ posts a week when certain individuals started "bullying", the moderation came too late & the forum is down to 10 to 20 posts per week. The forum is a photographic software group.

Can we get back to my original query now? Should the bathroom fitter supply an RCD, or is it admissable applying IEE 17, to re-use the existing supply without modification, being as it is a like for like swop? I read somewhere that my household insurance could be invalid if the shower doesn't have an RCD, besides the chance of zapping me with a 32amp fused supply.:icon14:

if manufacturers instructions (for the shower) stipulate a RCD, then they must fit one if there's not already one installed on the circuit the shower pump comes off.

I assume you don't trust them to be competant regarding the shiower then?

If you read all the thread, I have commissioned a bathroom fitting company to carry out the work on a fixed price. From conversations with the fitters I believe they will try to complete the work without fitting an RCD. I chose them as they have carried out a number of similar installations in my block.

This is my question, what makes you think this? I cannot imagine anyone fitting a shower without an RCD if it says so in the instructions, you have asked for info on RCDs, surely that is their Job, why don't you ask them about fitting one, if they say they won't then insist they do, as you have used them before you obviously trust them, confused. com here.
