Thanks for your replies i work in the South East but not in London..I am self employed and have been in the industry for about 40 years...I've never been involved in anything other than jobbing works..but interested in his to get into a better paid area of the trade

Whats your quality of life like in Barnet?

Most of my work is around Chelsea, Balham, Fulham,Kensington as well as some local work.

Building the business up for 4 years I now have a steady flow of work although it’s not been the smoothest journey.

I charge £90 for anything up to two hours £40 for every hour thereafter but generally prefer to do jobs on price.

Quality of life is so so. Abit sick of London In general tbh.

Two week backlog most of the time. Those rates are on the low side for London.

That's quite an eye opener for me..at the moment and at what I am able to charge i get about 50 to 60 percent of the work i price for...can't understand the vast difference in rates for the two areas...is there anyone else out there who has the same problem?

@Brian Taylor the rates of pay in Northern Ireland are a heck of a lot lower than what they would be just outside of the M25. But if I quoted works at £12 an hour for a spark I'd get 100% of jobs I quoted. 8 years ago the rate of pay for subbies here was as low as £11.50 -£12 an hour. I'm struggling to work out how you can run a electrical business charging just £12 an hour...

I would say I get about 95% of the work I quote for.

Everyone gets charged the same rates regardless if they are a millionaire from Chelsea or someone not so well off.

If someone came to give me a quote for such a small amount it would put me off using them tbh.

Well that's an interesting point the fact that I am charging ....compared with your area may make people be suspect of me...it's not something I'd considered...the only thing I will say is that my rate seems to be normal for the area....interested as to how i might get into this IT cabling if there is so much in it .

I don't think it's the area you live in, Rainham is still very close to London. I wouldn't expect the prices to change so much.

If you are running a business in electrical installation works, I just can't fathom how you are only charging £12 an hour to customers. Even more so given you live just outside of the M25.

Would imagine £50 for first hour and £35 every additional hour would be a step in the right direction for you.

What is it exactly that you do, work wise?

I do domestic mainly, some small commercial. My rate is well over double yours, and as I've said before, Northern Ireland has much lower rates of pay that just outside of London. No harm fella, but even round here painters, window cleaners, brickies etc are charging more than you are.
