I have accidentally cut a 16 mm earth wire running through my loft. It's in the middle of a 30 metre run. What's the approved/acceptable method of joining the cut ends?

Ideally it needs crimping with a butt splice for which you need a crimping tool. Do you know the purpose of the wire because it may be serving an important purpose and needs rectifying sooner rather than later. This would be a quick fix for the person with the correct tools. You probably want to avoid contact with the bare ends because depending on its purpose it may be carrying load.
