telephone socket resiting needed

thanks phil, i wasnt sure if i would be breaking any rules ,thanks. i need to have a telephone socket repositioned about 6 inch up the wall but the wires come in through the side of the front door and then run along skirting board and then is fixed to to the skirting. i would want the wiring to not come through the side of door but along the outside wall and then in to be fixed at position. i live in pleasley mansfield notts. hope someone can assist. thanks bornfree

If my memory serves me right I dont think we can meddle with BT's or anyone else's lines. I am fairly sure that if you short out 2 of the core's (no sure which 2) you can damage something in the exchange. I may be wrong. I will only move these things or replace them if i can do it without extending the cable.

Dont take my word for it though, someone will be along to either tell you that i am either right or wrong.

yes, you're right. I'm ex bt, only 50v on the line and can take a short without problem but up to the demarcation point is BT's responsibility, beyond that is up to you. BT socket splits into 2, you can only wire up to the bit that comes off. Incomming is usually blue and white stripe wire goes to A or position 2 and white with blue stripe wire goes to B or position 5.

Ex BT here too. BT will only correct a fault for free up to where the drop wire comes in contact with your property, i..e. where the wire coming from the pole touches the side of your house. After that point it is your responsibility, so by the same logic, you may do as you wish to it and get anyone you want to work on it. I would not advise paying BT their £125 plus vat callout fee plus half-hourly charge to do it.

ha ha, another ex b\t here, as long as you have enough slack on the cable , there is not a lot that can go wrong,& they will never know.

if i was within 10 miles of you i would do the job for £30 - £45 depending on how long it took. in my local rag there are 2 ex BT engineers advertising. if you have same in your local, give one a ring and get a price.

thanks for that advice everyone, i am sure there is plenty of slack in the wire to be able to take out the wires at the plug in point inside house and then pull it out to the outside and reroute it back in, there looks a lot of wire. i wouodnt want to do it because i know the wires are very thin and knowing me by the time i bared them 50 times there wouldnt be any left. i would rather pay someone responsibly trained, i know my job and you lot know yours, thanks again and if anybody is any where nearby i will be happy to pay for you to do i. oh by the way i looked again outside and if i have understood correctly about the wirng advice then the boxy thing on the wall where the wire comes out and then on to my wall doesnt look like it needs to be disconnected from there. sorry for my long winded reply. regards bornfree
