Hi there,

I'm attempting to replace our wall mounted outdoor light and when I went to remove the wiring it looked a little off.

Coming from the wall are 2x black, 2x red and 2x earth. The red wires are connected to form a loop. One black to live connection and one black to neutral connection.

My expectation was that live to live, neutral to natural so I'm a little stumped.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

standard loop in wiring. the 2 reds go together but not to the light. 1 black is Neutral ut the other black is switched Live. so connect the 2 reds tohether in a connector. then the 2 blacks go to the light. 1 to each terminal. to be pedanticc the switched L should be over sleeved red. the 2 cpc's (earths should be connected togeter; if there is an earth terminal on the light fitting, use it.

Thanks so much! This really threw me and I was surprised (my electrician knowledge isn't the best and I was expecting a similar setup to plugs).

Can you please explain what you mean by "to be pedanticc the switched L should be over sleeved red."?

Thanks again!!

basicaly, the switch wire is T/E which comes in red/black, so that's why the black( which is switched L) shuld be sleeved. twin red T/E is /was available but not so common. all changed now, it's brown/blue. another clever move by the IET (was (IEE) to confound and confuse , thus making more money for amendments to the regulations.
