Just curious to know when an alarm battery has began to warp what is actually happening inside the battery and to the cells?

After abaut 5 years the battery the lead acid drys out, and the plate cell tend to heat up and warp, usually before this happens the battery goes short and takes the charging fuse,

think Stepugh means a PP3 9 volt Battery, this happens with Alkaline types...its crystals forming due to the zinc plate breaking down in the potassium hydroxide paste inside when the battery goes past a certain age, the crystals grow and expand in volume, this forces the battery casing and bloats it out, eventually the sides or ends split open then water gets absorbed from the air by the crystals causing them to further expand and burst the battery, before the crystals get saturated enough to turn into a wet solution and seep out, reacting with the iron in the steel of the battery compartment spring or the copper terminal connector causing corrosion by the formation of metallic salts....the reaction can create an amount of chlorine that then reacts quite well with copper giving the green crystals....

if the wet paste seeping out gets onto printed circuit board tracks it will "etch" them away, basically dissolve them....which can happen in a smoke detector as the boards are quite often exposed beside the battery..same for digital cameras and AA battery powered radios....
