Another vote for the Fluke T5-1000; hard to beat (can be had on ebay for under $120 AU) and pretty much bulletproof.

AFAIK, It is manufactured in China though :/

Fluke t-5 all the way...

I have only scan read this but I've never tripped a rcd with my fluke ???

I decided to purchase the T5-1000 unit, but apparently I also need a proving unit and a contact voltage indicator for an annual inspection with a scam (such a the NICEIC). Is this true? If so, do I need something like a Martindale VI13700/2 and a PD440 kit?

you don't need to buy a proving unit. use the incoming terminals to prove tester.

Fluke T5 1000 for me. mine got broken a while back so need to buy another one though. hoping someone buys it for my birthday next week though... :)

Any voltage tester from a decent manufacturer, with an actual voltage reading, rather than a voltage band indication, based on led lights!!

For an apprentice, (as indicated in the OP) it doesn't need to be the ''best'' or a ''top of the range'' unit either!!!

it says use any know source.

quicker to use tails if you have access to in db

prove on incoming, test outgoing, reprove. job done. quicker than using proving unit

If a voltage tester can't display the actual voltage at the test point, you might as well use a neon screwdriver!! lol!!
