Can i run the cables above the metal mf joists(cable tied to joists) or do I have to run cables for lighting circuits etc on suspended trays.

Cables shouldn't be supported solely by the suspended ceiling gridwork at all IMO.

You should install a support system for them, be it tray, basket or if funds are really tight, a catenary wire strung wall to wall with cable fixed to it with cable ties etc.

I have used these before too, fixed direct to the slab with cableing cable tied to them.

My choice would be conduit and cliks/gregs.

There is a school of thought to recommend securing light fittings with gripple wire to ceiling slab (Hilti DX fixings possibly).

In the event of fire the fittings arent going to fall on the incoming firemen.

When the job allows, as said, tray basket or conduit is the best option. On a budget though, some loops of powder coated all round band securely fixed at regular intervals gets my vote.

Yes, good product, totally adequate for T&E installations.

To the OP, a true MF ceiling (as opposed to lay-in grid) has the boards screwed through from below and there is always 20-25mm of screw left poking through the MF, more than enough to screw straight through any cables lying on the metal surface.

You can run cables over ceiling grid but they have to be specifically designed to do so... thorlux intelligent fittings have a plug socket lead to loop fitting together and have met requirements to be allowed to be run over ceiling grid, this was also confirmed by clark of elelctrical work and the NICEIC who viewed this particular job, having said this 99% of time its a no/no!
