Installed this but I did not have enough Lux to commission it on the day.

Went back today to find this

!!! Bloody Idiots !!!

Surface clipped DC cables @ 400V + AC cable clipped direct (not on an RCD) covered in foam!!! Bloody Idiots!!!!!! I ripped it out away from the cables and left the mess for the builders to clean up. Left my phone number on the inverter if they want to ask any questions,..... rounded door handles lol.

Marsh Mellow Man from Ghost Busters springs to mind???

Twice he'd connector blocked the earth do a conductor core........! Pretty much every connection in the lights and sockets had the cores snipped down as well! A red single coming out of a neutral connector block, don't know where that goes yet it was right at the end of the day, the house is empty though and no power. I don't know how half of it worked, the voltages I was getting at lighting circuits was crazy, ended up being poor connections and some nicked cables. Started of as a partial rewire...........

Asked if I could sort this out as the homeowner & his M8 had got this far & could I give a price to wire the house electrics they had just run to a new consumer unit & he even had the unit for me to install.

looks like a central junction box for the lights . get up there, clean it up, see what does what and remake with some labels and wagos.
worth getting a helper, you sit comfortably testing in the loft, someone goes around with a wander lead or flips the switches.
at least is one in all place.

You've got it in one, that's the plan (I just like a good moan!)

I can't blame a fellow spark for this but some of the previous work was dubious to say the least.

I got a call to a pub that had previous evidence of a rat invasion and they had chewed through the cable supplying the outside lights under the floor space in the first floor.

Yesterday whenever the hand dryer was switch on it tripped the RCD. IR test showed a short on all three wires. Followed it back from the gents roof space above to discover this. Ehmmm nice wires says Mr Rat! My understanding is that vermin will chew through anything that blocks their path, rather than the thought that they are simply sharpening their teeth. The hand dryer was spurred off the lighting circuit for the toilets, neither the cable or the breaker were spec'd high enough to handle the power of the dryer anyway.

At first it wasn't really obvious that the chewing had happened until you pulled the wires back through the hole in the wall. What gave it away was the black marks all over the cable that something had been passing back and forth. The hole leads back under the living room floor for the accommodation above the pub. So I by passed the dodgy part of the cable back to the CU with a temporary cable, until the laminated floor can be lifted next week to see what lies beneath? My Jack Russell is coming with me next week just in case!!

whoever would have expected something "live" around the house of lords?

I'm still trying to figure out which picture I find more disturbing. The bleak attempt to strengthen the joist or the fact that he drilled through the joist in the first place. image.jpgimage.jpg The house was apparently rewired by the homeowners mate 6 months ago. The 16th edition board, lack of paperwork and generally rough wiring just makes me laugh. How do these guys get away with it?!
