How do you test a 110v extension lead.We are testing in a very similar way to an iec lead but obviously with 110 v adaptors connected. the result always comes back as a multiple fault on the polarity test.

Might be a good idea if you told us what PAT tester you are using.
 
Hi Redman01, just read your post, I use the same machine as you and I've connected a 15 metre 110v ext lead to test with adaptors at both ends.The machine was set on autotest and went straight through the EB, IR and Polarity without any problem, how have you connected your lead up to the machine?
 
good news and bad news............ im not cracking up the pat tester is fault ............ :( also any ideas where i can buy a new transformer from. thanks

Hi again, glad it's the machine not you,....I recently bought a 3.3kva 16a twin socket transformer on E-bay for £28, I wanted one so that I could power my Pat machine up from a 110v supply in order to do 110v load tests.There seems to be plenty on E-bay, just that they have high delivery charges due to the weight of them.Alternatively, look on MachineMart or Toolstation, they have them at reasonable prices.

Hi K-Pat,

I have Metrel MI3304 Tester and I have been asked to test 110v appliances. I have the 110v adapter to test extension leads but in order to test drills etc, I need to connect the tester to a 110v supply to conduct load tests.

Sorry if I am being thick here, but how do I connect the tester that has a 3 Pin 230v Plug to a 110v supply?

You could probably make one up for a lot less cost. Just make sure it's PAT tested before use... :smug:

I have been wondering the same thing as have also got some 110V appliances to test, I am using the Metrel AlphaPAT 2142 and the following is form the Alphapat manual...
9.1 110 V adapter

The AlphaPAT instrument allows measurements of 110 V appliances. When the 110 V
adapter is used only the following measurements can be performed:

  • earth bond resistance,
  • insulation resistance,
  • substitute leakage current, and
  • TRMS current.
Other measurements are prohibited in order to prevent damage of the tested appliance
if 230 V voltage is connected to it. The adapter is designed to prevent accidental
connection of 230 V supply voltage to the tested appliance. In substitute leakage current
measurement the displayed value is automatically calculated to 110 V when adapter is
connected to the instrument.

9.1.1 How to perform measurements by using 110 V adapter
In order to test 110 V appliance first connect 110 V adapter to the main test socket of
the instrument.


(in the manual this appears to be an adapter for the appliance and not the mains side of the tester)

Connecting 110 V adapter to the instrument

If the 110 V adapter is connected to the test socket the following screen will be
displayed after starting earth bond resistance, insulation resistance or substitute
leakage current measurement:

(How does the tester know that the 110V lead is connected? If I make a lead up will it recognise it as a 110V lead? There is no mention of connecting the AlpahPAT to a 110V transformer for load testing etc.)

If you want to perform leakage current and power measurement, touch leakage current
measurement or polarity test, the following screen appears on the display for a few
seconds after the start:

Has anyone done 110V tests with the AlphaPAT if so how was it done and did you use the 'official' lead?
