big-aj

I am currently studying for the 17th and in my course notes I came across something quite unusual. Now correct me if I am wrong but the course states that in the Special Locations section of the regs 240v hand tools are allowed as long as you comply with the regs. Check it out

Special locations
704 Construction and demolition site installations
Only the area where construction work is being carried out require special consideration,
other areas such as site huts, do not need to meet the special requirements.
Sockets allowed to be used are no longer restricted to 110 volt centre tapped to earth or
three phase transformer. You are now allowed to use a 240v hand tool as per IEE reg
704.410.3.10 (page 181) Another system that can be used is SELV.
Where three phase equipment is used cranes etc the voltage to earth is still 230 volts so
the disconnection time is 0.2mS. Touch voltage is the usual
50 volts.

Wiring systems used either underground or overhead must use mechanical protection.
The usual regulations apply to the switchgear and isolation systems. Where plugs and
sockets are used they must comply to BS EN 60309-2.
