Been away for a week, before I went I arranged a builder from Rated people to lay some slabs in my garden. I was then adding some recessed lighting.

Well I can't wait until he gets here tomorrow, the first part is like a donkeys hind leg, and finishes at the same hight as the DPM whist also falling back into the house.

I will post some pics up later on, what a mess.

Why do I always end up with the muppets :83:

If it's any consolation - and I know it won't be - that's exactly the way mine is. The difference is that mine was like this when I bought the place 4 years ago.

Nice to be in the position of you holding the money back until it's sorted, its usually the other way round in this trade!

Where do these people come from, I have no idea, on Rated people he has over 50 lots of feedback with all 5 starts.
Must be family and friends!

Can't wait until he gets back here so I can point out the error of his ways !

The funny thing was when he quoted the job, he said no payment until your completely satisfied, and no deposit :)
I thought that must have been confidence in his ability, how wrong I was

What do you think his reply will be?

Well Guv i was only following the contours of the land, what do you expect me to do, dig it all out and make it flat? Your avin a laugh!

I put money on he comes up with that one or it's so the rain water runs back to the drain :13:

This is my problem with rated people and the others alike. If I wired in some cables how do the customer know I have done it correctly to the current regs, the correct size cable etc. they don't. It's like the blind leading the blind! If I turn up on time, crack on with some work ad don't leave til late. Make sure the customer is always happy then I'm guaranteed a 5 star rating

The first thing I'd ask you is what did you agree on before getting him to start.

Even if the the new paving was graded away from the house, it'd be above the DPC by quite a bit from the photos. Looks like there should of been a bit of groundwork done before starting.

Is it Indian Sandstone paving? If its getting laid onto a dry sand or sand cement bed, you're running into problems pretty soon anyhow.

If for whatever reason he couldn't slope it away from the house, at very least an ACO drain should have been fitted.

Where is the top of the stone closest to the house? How far down is it from the damp proof course?

Its not, he has brought it level to the DPM.

No need to slope back to the property at all, he's just put the edging in about 200mm to high. It helps if firstly you get your ground work right.

Anyway his answer was, I will rip it out and start again.

Silly me, I always thought that a path/patio had to be below the DPM!

Yea me too !!!!!!

Anyway he's been told, level base, lay on wet mix ! and finish below the at least 2 bricks below the DMP

Thing was if he had just lifted the existing and laid on the old base he would have been at the right level.

I did have a chuckle when he put the edge in, :hammer:.

Unfortunatley there will always be the few that spoil it for the rest of us, my work is always invoiced and if nessecerry the correct certificates issued, therefore my work is traceable as i have nothing to hide and take pride in the fact that all my work complies to regs and is of a high standard. I have just insisted to a rated people customer that i need to come to see a job before i quote and the other day i went to look at a job and the guy said that the other guy that rang him up wanted something stupid like £140 just to come out,

150mm below damp proof is whats recommended in regs i think

As stated above, an ACO linear drain into the surface water drain would be grand. Also saves having all the water run off onto the lawn and water log that

Builders are not all bad I have a hungerian guy in roughcasting my house and he could teach anyone about work ethics and pride. I got him recommended by a few folk in th local and he turns up at 8 and works till 4 always cleans up and his work is spot on!. My old man who happens to be a structural engineer had a nosy at it and he was well impressed.
