I'm starting the 2365 level 2 course in September and I'm required to have a basic installation kit. I've seen this kit :

I'm wondering if I should buy a kit like this one or buy tools as I go along and I'd rather spend money on good quality tools now that will last me years than having to replace them every so often.

What do you guys recommend I do?

Buying a kit like that will save you money on buying individual items.
Break them down and price them and you will see for yourself.
Try and shop around though , you may find that same kit cheaper. That is a decent quality brand too, but be careful as there are different standards of CK.

My Dad told me told me always buy the best I could afford. It is good advice.

Is there anything you would add on top of that kit that is required when starting out in college or are the basics covered in this kit?

First thing I will say is don't lend them out .
Keep a close eye on them too.

Many will tell you to ditch the neon tester.
At a glance that seems adequate for college, although not sure if they will let you use that knife.
The best thing to do is ask at the college what you will need.
It takes many years to build a good tool kit, and a lot of money.

A small socket set is a useful addition, but you may not need that right away.

Personally I would go for individual tools, some of these kits are OK but the bag is kack, and some of the tools you will hardly ever use, try and always buy the best, I know it's costly but that's my 5 pennys worth, oh and good luck.

bag - 15-20
hacksaw 15
file 5
set square 15
screwdrivers 15-20
grips x2 30
level
snips v 20

you can go cheaper but that kit will last

What brand would you all personally buy for each individual tool?

A breakdown of each item would be brilliant help.

Bag -
Screwdrivers -
Grips -
etc.

I've just stumbled across this tool kit -http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Makita-P-46517-96-Piece-Electricians-Tool-Kit-/221738459707

Any thoughts?
