Hi I have just bought a new cooker and it has a cable and plug on it but my old one doesn't. Can I put a socket on the existing cable (6mm I think) and then just plug it in.

Most likely, yes you can.

However, it should be protected by an rcd.
And although not strictly necessary, it would be worth considering wether the circuit breaker feeding that circuit should be down rated.

Thank you. The existing cable is on an RCD in the fuse box, that circuit also has a normal socket for the kitchen on it, I use it for the kettle.

Sorry one more thing, how do I calculate what size circuit breaker I will need for my cooker.

You don't size circuit breakers according to the load, they should be sized according the the size of cable that was installed, the type of circuit (ring or radial) and also according to the way the cable was installed and its length.
