For the others - I'm wondering if someone in the past has attempted to lash up some sort of clean earthing@Scotz74 - this might sound daft, but are there any audio/tv/av kind of outlet plates anywhere nearby??

Yes, but I can pull about six inches in but no more and doesn't seem to be part of a 3-core.It is just the black and not another three core cable.
Thanks, I probably need to get a pro in.Important point to note.
The black wire that is joined with the bare copper cables in the earth terminal, just because it is black doesn’t mean that it is a neutrual .
by removing it you may be introducing a danger to the installation that has not been considered. (This is true even if it “fixes” your tripping issues)
before doing anything else, we need to be certain of where that cable connects to.
