does anybody know of any good design software for designing logos etc

just got loads of cards from vista print and not happy with them going to design my own well a least try lol
 
Serif Drawplus (2D & 3D Drawing Program) or Pageplus (Desktop Publishing Program) are both very capable and probably better than Gimp because they handle vector graphics (image scalable without loss of detail) in addition to normal raster graphics. Free versions are available for download, but latest versions are paid for, all are fine for your application.
