Hi Guys
I have a consumer unit that is protected by an ELCB,is this similar to an RCD or does the consumer unit need to be replaced with split RCD board. Thanks in advance.

It was an early from of RCD. They can either be voltage or current operated. As of the mid 90's they were taken out of the regs and no longer recognised.

You still find loads of these knocking about on TT installations. It is recommended to replace them, but be aware, if you do decide to replace it then you will have to go down the road of bringing the installation upto the 17th edition which may not be a bad thing.

Is there a problem then with the ELCB?

On the voltage operated devices there was often a yellow test button and a terminal labelled 'frame' or 'F'.

The problem was, they did not 'see' parallel paths, only monitoring voltage on the cpc at the device.

All industry guidance is to remove and replace these units, particularly if they are the sole means of protection on a TT system.
