Hello there,

I am Simon and I am looking for some help from some of you experts with some electrical work that I'm getting stuck with. I always do alot of DIY and am more than happy changing my switches or putting extra sockets in. I did my own kitchen last year but I recently decided to change my fusebox because it was really starting to smell badly and it was probably unsafe. I realise that this is a bit more advanced than just adding a socket so I got one of the more modern looking ones from homebase with the switches instead and I have replaced my old one with this. The problem is that when I connect the green and yellow wire into the bar at the top like on my old fusebox nothing works and I cant get two of the switches to stay on?? I have left it off for now but I know it is important as it connects everything to ground so I dont want to start a fire or anything. what I need to know is how do i get this connected without it affecting the switches?

This has been bugging me for days and nothing on google seems to point me in the right direction. I should also say for clarity that everything has been connected exactly as shown on the instructions that came with the new fusebox.

Any help would be really really great thanks.

Wow, a rather hostile bunch today! Thank you jdsparky, I have four circuits, light, power, shower and cooker. I didn't think you had to test your own work? It has worked fine for years apart from the bad smell. That smell is gone now but like I said I cant get it all to work proprly with ground connected. I did phone an electrician and he wanted £250 to replace the box!!

I am realising that I might be a little out of my depth here but I can pick up pretty much anything fast. How much do you think it would cost to get an electrician out to look at my work and work out what the problem is considering I have now replaced the box myself? Obviously I dont want things to be dangerous but I didnt want to get ripped off for hundreds of pounds to just replace a box and screw some cables down.

I am here to learn afterall

Sounds to me like you've cracked this trade. Such a shame you're so far away from me, always looking for quality electricians

@OP. when you've killed someone and are up before the judge for manslaughter, make sure you represent yourself. after all, lawyers are rip-off merchants, charging hundreds of £££ just for talking bull sh!t.

Best thing I've heard all day!! lol

Ha, those pesky earth cables. The trick with a fusebox is to guess which wire goes in which hole, you get better as you become more experienced and sometimes there is no right hole and you will have to put the old one back or do a little re-wiring.

It really is easy, but can be frustrating at your first attempt.

If there are 20 wires and five choices of hole it can be a bit long winded to do it by trial and error, but if you have the time - why not.
Would recommend a face shield, extinguisher and rubber gloves when energising though
OR you could just call a sparky....ha ha

i couldn't help it, probably a wind up but there are some people that actually attempt this sort of thing without any idea in what they are doing.

I know what you mean.

I did one for my mate last week and without the help of the nice bloke at B&Q to guide me would have really struggled.

It's all done now, and I'm just waiting for Glensparks to come & sign it off.

If the green yellows are causing it to trip just cut em off. It's a common sight for us sparks to see in light fittings the g/y cut off cos that's how the DIYers found it, in the same way as they found all the browns together and all the blues together when they changed the light fitting. ' I put it back exactly as I found it but it keeps blowing so that's why I called you' !?!?!?!?!?

£250 sounds quite cheap for a CU! Id take up the local sparky on his offer!! If you have the earth disconnected at present you have a dangerous situation on your hands. Id also check your house insurance is up to date, if it even covers DIY electrical work which i doubt!!
