Impact vs combi drill for drilling holes

Who uses impacts to drill holes though wood rather than standard drills Ect, I've just started and think there amazing.

Anyone see any pros cons from using an impact instead of a standard drill?

I have used the impactor to drill through a joist on the odd occasion as it been to hand at the time. When I've got run of holes to do like when doing new builds I get the 110V angle drill out. I don't think most spade bits are designed to withstand the impact.

I often use my impact driver with Armeg wood beaver stubby bits. They do tend to break eventually but we're talking a couple of thousand holes before this happens.

Nice not to have to worry about your wrist being broken if you're stretching a bit and you can get a straight hole in all but the tightest of joist gaps.

Only downside is it does make a bit of a racket.

I think it depends on the actually bit you use, I move been using the Bosch devil one, it's thick metal and its curved, seams well made. I just like to fact, 1 it's cordless, 2 short , 3 effortless and no switching it always goes through, 4 always have it to hand,

I have the standard Makita combi drill and it won't work with the Bosch bits that have the screw on the end, it's not powerful enough, yet I don't need another drill as I wouldn't get the use out of it also, and I use impacts for everything, and using standard wood flat bits take ages and strain my arm pushing on it at angles.

I have anything with a plug on it, it drives me potty with the leads.

And to be fair, if I'm happy, all the others on side can do one, even if it's noisy.
It's just tradesmen stuck in their ways.

After that many, you'd want an excuse to buy a nice new sharp bit Anyways and its earned it money.

What about the breakout on the other side??

It'll be looking something like a burst tyre.

I get a better smoother hole on the other side than using standard wood flat bits , maybe my experience, but with the impact I don't really push at all and it come out fairly tidy.

Nice clean hole with the armeg wood beaver in an impactor if you let it pull its way through instead of pushing it

Reviews I look at seem to show that the Bosch comes out smoother on the other side compared to the beaver ameg ones using impacts

I've never though of using impacts to drill wood - it doesn't seem "right" somehow.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned - I still have me Grandad's brace and all his other carpentry gear. It's all well over 100 years old now.

That doesn't mean I used the brace for drilling joists - oh no!! I have a Bosch angle drill and a set of wood augers - and flat bits.

So you are using an impact driver to drill through wood with standard flat bits? Not tried this and would have never tried it but will have to try it now just out of curiosity.

Not standard wood but but the Bosch devel bit, it basically has the screw bit on the end that pulls it through

The armeg beavers have the screw on the front.

Yes they do but because there more aggressive they make a rougher exit, haven't tried but the videos show so

I use a small but powerful Bosch mains drill (GSB16RE). No point knackering expensive batteries on butchering wood.

which makita drill are you using? i find with my 481 it doesnt struggle at all and i rarely have to put it in gear 1. (quicker than impact driver) as soon as the torque starts to build my impact driver almost stops dead

irwin auger bits for me

Mines the standard one with the kit, but don't use much so doesn't warrant me buying and exsoencive one, as I only do domestic and self employed. Also the impact is nice and short.

the kit one is £35 body only in otherwords the guarentty iis worthless as it costs more to ship it to them than to buy a new one XD.

get a 458 or 481.

458 is around £70 body only, i got my 481 for around 100 body only


makita 10.8 drill is nearly as powerful as the 453 XD

Can anyone see how using the impact for drilling will damage it, in my opinion it's the same as drilling long screws in.??

I'd say basic science ... long screws have a small point to start the process and wood bits have a wide spread!

So what's that mean, you think it will or won't?

Personally, the impact I feel is designed to impact screws round and so it should be fine with the wood bits, if it was t budging the wood bit I wouldnt use it as , it can move a 25mm wood bit faster than a 3-4 inch screw!!

I'll email Makita and see what they think haha should be an interesting response

Update, Makita say they don't recommend it as its not been tested for this type off use as it's not designed for this, but can't see how it will damage it either,
Off coarse they will say this as they want you to buy their higher end drill . They said if if it wasn't coping , if using the brushless motor it would just cut out Ect.

I even explained I like it cuz it's nice and short and effortless at awkward angles and no change of any snagging ect

It's £70 for a new one so I'm gonna use it and time will tell!!
