Hey all.
I would appreciate an honest opinion with regard to a quote I am due to email tonight to a couple whom I did some work for in the past. They contacted me a few weeks ago as their downlights in the bathroom have been playing up.
I had a quick look in the loft to find what I can only describe as a complete abomination. In an area no more than say 1 x 2M squared (area above downlights) there is about 8 joint boxes and at least half of them feed directly into each other in like a daisy chain with dual feeds going all over the place. Spiders web is an understatement!
Need I mention that the terminations or most of them, are outside the joint boxes. This screams DIY.
I have advised them that the upstairs lights should be rewired and I am going to fit new downlights as the existing ones are bodged DIY fittings (like that when they moved in and been that way since).
They agree that they should be rewired but have asked me to try to salvage what I can. I did some tests and the majority of the switch wires are ok but the feeds that are all over the place I will rewire.
Now, I will put down what I am going to do and what I think it should cost. Any advice would be more than welcome. Thanks for reading:
Rewire feeds to study, landing, bedroom and bathroom lights (including removing all said JB's)
Wire new feed to extractor fan and have switched independantly + supply and fit fan (existing fan circuit part of bodged wiring & doesn't include isolator)
Fit 5x GU10 IP rated downlights
Rewire feed and switch wire to loft fluorescent fitting + BLH and fit new switch (again all wiring DIY and in very poor condition)
Remove old redundant 3 cores going to unused cupboard light (basically part of rewiring lights I suppose)
Test and relevant documentation.
It is worth mentioning that the loft is boarded out completely and a panel was removed where I saw the fiasco that was the downlights. My price includes a days labour as I worked a day during the Bank Hol weekend to further investigate, do some tests etc and to get more boards up (hence my decision to rewire it upon seeing more JB's with wires going all over the show).
I am hoping to get it all done in a weekend so I'm thinking 2 days but I might stretch it to 3 as there is loads of stuff in the loft and the couple didn't sound to keen on moving it (yes I politely asked them to have it moved prior to me starting the work).
I also have to put the boards back etc. So my figure with labour + mats is £700.
Does this sound fair? Am I going in too steep or am I cutting my own throat? Thanks and apologies for the waffle
