Every gas engineer needs to be gas safe registered. I know there isn't an equivalent body for the electrical industry. Only companies need to be Niceic etc, not individuals. I know electricians don't have to be JIB registered but to get onto most sites you now need your ECS/JIB card so was wondering if you did need the latest regs to get one. Shame it's not mandatory to have a JIB card to be a practicing Electrian.

Not every electrician is working on “site”. Why would I as a permanently employed maintenance electrician need the JIB. I and the other lads always regarded the JIB as a joke.

It is surprising how those who work at installation become focused on these bodies,as Tony stated, in maintenance the Niceic,Jib and other schemes can be little more than nonentities, hardly needing mentioning
An electrician can easily go through his working life having no need and sometimes not much concern of their existence

I have never bothered applying for a jib card simply down to the fact that I've never been asked for one. As long as your qualified I don't think it should matter personally.

The JIB/SJIB have never had anything to do with maintenance electricians in the industrial sector. But give credit where credit is due, although they don't always get things right, you won't find a single electrical trainee or 17 day whizz kid holding a valid Electricians JIB grade card. It's about the only organisation that has stood it's ground on minimal standards an electrician should hold in order to be called an ''Electrician''

I don't think the posts were judging the merit of the JIb rather than the assumption by the poster who made this statement

You won’t find a Electrical Trainee in maintenance either. The correct qualifications and experience count.

Like you I see a national register for all electricians as the only way forward. It will cause a lot of upset by setting standards. It works in many countries and is accepted by all.
