New build wiring

Hi all,Got a problem here with a new build extension to an older property.I will want to use this for my assessment soon so i am fretting about getting this spot on.I am running a new ring circuit upstairs in what will be a bedroom.I am familiar with safe zones but my question is..sockets that i have located at 450mm above floor(upstairs only), will i need to run cables up to ceiling and along or can they go down the wall to under the floorboards and on through joists (in permitted areas). This is how its done in old properties but just checking with new builds.Hope this is in correct section.Thanks

Cables can still go under the floors. The 450 rule doesn't matter on extensions I believe only new builds.

Thanks truckster,quick reply !! yeh,know about 450 rule,just thought if i didnt put it here someone will pick me up on it lol.Just checking the cable going down wall as it will eventually go behind skirting(with capping of course)

If building control are to pass it off it's building regs heights my friend

Depends if the building control guy got out of bed the wrong side. I have had one say it had to be at 450mm and a NICEIC guy.

It's maybe different south of the border but up here any work that has a building warrant must use the new heights except i think a loft conversion.

I believe that the heights only apply to new builds. Not had any problems yet.....

There was a post about a year ago from a spark that did a loft conversion with a spiral stair case so absolute no access for a wheelchair user. Made him put all skts 450mm!

He must have been a jobs worth or got out of the wrong side of bed.

Building regs state new builds or converted for disabled use.

but there's building regs. and building inspectors.now if the inspector reads and understands the regs. then there should be no problems: it's when you get jobsworth inspectors that might be able to read, but not apply reading to reality. most of these types failed the entrance test for traffic wardens.

Ok thanks all.Problem solved.Just so you know,I was sent a spec sheet with the building plans beforehand which specified smoke and heat detectors but also specified heights for fittings as per regs.As this is an extension to an existing property then i thought they would look better to match others.I have contacted LBC and been told that the paperwork they send has to comply to the current building regs....but as it says in wiring regs."socket outlets in new dwellings" this is not strictly a new dwelling only an extension.The answer in this instance is they are happy to let me fix them the same as the old fit. Check twice-Fix once...Ta

Lucky boy getting away with that, an extension is new and building regs should suffice to heights same as a newbuild
however if it's a domestic refurbishment normal heights apply

Presume that's when fixing the socket boxes.
Glad they've come round to the correct way of thinking.

It actually states in the elecs guide to building regs the socket and switch heights don't apply to existing building(even when extended) only new build

Does it work out your switch and socket heights automatically and chop itself to suit ?

I tend to put everthing at 450 & 1200 top now as force of habbit, not done much domestic work but i do the same in shop fits / offices etc
