Newbie on the Home based level 2&3

This is my first post of many to the forum so please be kind

At the age of 30, I’ve just signed up to a home learn level 2&3 2365 course with able skills based in Dartford. Just wondering if anyone has done this course as a home learn and if you have any advice?

I’m currently employed full time earning good money hence the home based learning but I’m doing this as a fall back for the future as well as allowing me to carry out any work I need at home safely and legally.

Once I’ve completed level 2&3 I’m hoping to work through towards a gold card eventually and maybe go self employed in time to come.

I look forward to the responses around the Home based learning both good and bad

PS: Does anyone know if is it possible to do the level 3 NVQ without working for somebody else? Could you go self employed, find your own work and have it assesed that way?

Don’t know much about the home course but the level 3 NVQ is something I very much doubt you can achieve by not working for a company or subbing off one.

To achieve an NVQ the assesments for the portfolio you’ll be required to fill in will be that of commercial and industrial not domestically so getting a Gold card you’ll need to get in with a company where these assesments will be.

Yes you can achieve the NVQ L3 by being self employed, the company overseeing your portfolio will have to attend site with you or some will be happy to do a skype link up or similar. You will need to evidence all of the different containment and wiring types required. If you are just starting your level 2 I wouldn't worry about the NVQ yet as you have a long way to go!

I suppose my other option for the NVQ would be to offer to work for a local experienced electrician free of charge on my days off. I currently do 4 9.5hr days on a rota pattern so have the time to spare. Does this sound like something an experienced electrician would likely be interested in? It’s free labour after all

Hi there, welcome.
The NVQ may be possible as self employed but does require varied installations so may be hard to cover all as a newly self employed electrician.
An experienced electrician will unfortunately not gain by having free labour unless the person already knows what they are doing. Spending their time explaining what is required will cost them time and money, so do well in your training so that you can provide a service whether in or out of self employment.

That’s the trouble I’m going to come up against mate, unfortunately electrician is one of those trades unlike Plasterers, bricklayers, general builders etc where free labour would benefit them Greatly where working free for an electrician could be seen as more of a hindrance.
