NVQ 3 rate of pay

Hello all! I'll be receiving my NVQ level 3 in electrotechnical engineering at the end of this academic year and I was wondering what rates of pay any of you currently receive for likewise qualifications. I'm currently 21 years old but will be 22 at the time of qualification.

Thanks for the reply mate. Well I'm taught by a well rated electrical firm consisting of 5 people (two bosses; 2 Sparks and myself as an apprentice). I consistently finish top of my class in college and finish all my work to a high standard. I do mostly the same work as whoever I'm working with that day (apart from testing and inspecting - however I do practice it when able to).
Hoping that my pay will increase sufficiently so I don't have to work my weekend job and be able to concentrate on having a social life haha.

I'm at a bit of a loss here as to how you know that you'll be receiving the NVQ level 3 at the end of the academic year?? The very nature of the NVQ is that it is (hands-on) experience based. How do you know what you'll be actually working on at the end of the year?? It could well be in an area of work that you have already gained an accreditation for!!!!

Well done on going down the long road to becoming qualified mate, how much do you think your worth ???
The site's i work on are all price work so providing your quick and can can do a professional tidy job without having to go back to fix anything you've got wrong then you earning potential comes down to how hard your willing to graft.
Ultimately though your experience and workmanship will determine your wages although your qualifications will help towards you getting the job your after. Good Luck

Thanks mate, it's very much worth it and I absolutely love it too. Well that's what I'd like to find out what the average wage people are earning with the same qualification. One of my main mentors in work is only qualified to NVQ level 2 - but has 14 years working experience - and earns around twice as much as I do.

Even more confused now because you should after completing an apprenticeship, either be gaining (if you pass your finals) C&G 2365 + NVQ3 or 2357 + NVQ3 providing all proof criteria has been accredited with regards to NVQ3 requirements ...NOT just the ''add-on'' NVQ3 qualification to the foundation electrical courses, (eg 2365/2357)??? Also strange, no mention of AM2 which i understand was/is normally also tagged on to the end of 2365/2357 courses.....

He probably earns twice as much as he is much much more experienced and good at his job.
It's no good turning up on site with a folder full of qualifications but then fall to bits when you are asked to do a 1st fix.
The jib website has gradings for pay on there website i think mate.

JIB Rates for a qualified electrician are as follows
From jan 2014
Transport provided - £12.89 ph
Use your own Transport - £13.70 ph
London rates are
Transport provided -£14.43 ph
Use your own Transport - £15.35 ph
You need to read the JIB rule book on their site to see if you have the minimum qualifications to become a graded electrician. The JIB is seen by most in the trade as a base to set the wages on....Even if the firm are non JIB you should be looking at those rates as a base guide for a PAYE job as an electrician.....You would want considerably more if you are subbying/self employed.

Seems the OP's mentor is on around 30 quid an hour if working to JIB rates in London then, or around 26 quid if he's not.

Then you look at some of the vacancies being advertised around and they are offering the Princely sum of 9 quid an hour and want every qualification in the book, and to have experience of just about every system you can think of!!! lol!!

when u get your nvq 3 done, just sort out your j.i,b card. ps you dont need to take the h&s test as u just done the nvq 3, then chat to your boss about a pay rise,

Well that's the rates. Remember you can get £10 per hour working in aldi. So I would not have said JIB rates are in any way excessive nor are they high enough in all reality. I would rather sweep the floor for £10 per hour than have responsibility for £13 or whatever. If people want to sell themselves short and devalue the trade then fair play to them.

Couldn't agree more Diddy mate, but round our way commercial sparks on the books are on little more than £10per hr. Glad I made the move to self employed, the money we used to be on started to really wind me up!

£10 per hour ? WTF, You really would be better off shelf stacking at tescos on nights for £13 odd. Drive something for a living and you will get around that without the hassle. I really despair if a qualified tradesman of any trade is hawking his skill set for £10 per hour.
As a little aside I once knew a JIB graded technician who found the stress of running medium sized jobs just too much for him as it was affecting his health ect. He eventually quit and went to work for one of the builders he had got friendly with as a labourer ......spoke to him on site one day and said to him don't you miss it ? Don't you miss the thinking part of the game ect.....He said he had never been happier in his working life than he was now that he was guaranteed his wages at the end of the week...knew he would be last on site at the end of the job and basically did not have to take pressure and all the rubbish that comes from running medium to large sized jobs. He was not on much less cash than he was previously either....Makes you think sometimes.
I for one would rather not sell my electrical services short....now if you want me to labour for you for a day fine I will happily take labourers pay and so on.

It all depends mate, what kind of work does your firm do?housebashers generally tend to earn less than commercial who generally tend to earn less than lads who just do industrial work. Then it depends what kind of apprenticeship you've had, if you've been mothered right the way through your time you won't be anywhere near as usefull as a lad who's been taught to stand on his own two feet and take pride and responsibility in his work

it's swings and roundabouts mate but the way things are thesedays I wouldn't be marching into your gaffers office five minutes after been told your out of your time demanding more money unless you know you can justify your worth
