Hi All,

I wish to install a simple lighting spur comprising an outdoor bulkhead light and outdoor switch on an outside brick wall under a lean-to, what spec cable should I use? I prefer not to use a PVC conduit. The spur will go through the wall to an indoor 13A socket.

Mike.

Would you believe the existing installation is 1.5 TE and indoor switch!! to a tube. Can FP200 black be clipped to a brick wall? What about Hi-tuf?

Mike.

Whatever cable you use ensure its UV tolerant if exposed to direct sunlight ... Many flex, FP's and T&E are not suitable.

Mike with all respect, can I ask if you are a qualified electrician..?

No, but I have a degree in Electronic Engineering and feel capable in replacing a simple lighting spur. For your inf. I have ben quoted £300 - £400 from a national group!!!

Mike.

Sorry Mike, can I advise you to use the diy section.....you will find it more helpful on simple installations such as this.

Get a local sparks in not the rip off large national group we can all think of... you'll be surprised ..... always get multiple quotes, these big companies like BG sub in local Electricians and you end up paying for a middle man so to speak instead of just going direct to the local sparks.

Mike - if all you need to do is run a cable through a wall from a fused spur (not a good idea to run a light straight off a socket that's protected by a 32A device (assuming a modern ring)) and to a switch, then onto a light adjacent to it - then yes, hi-tuf or any other UV resistant 1 or 1.5mm cable will be more than suitable. You should be able to find it by the metre from a variety of wholesalers or online (try the forum sponsor here for starters).

With all due respect if you was capable you wouldn't be asking all these questions. Have you considered how you are going to tested it.

Why don't you get a local guy to quote you for job.

I feel I must reply to Megavolt!! I am quite capable. I have contacted 3 electrical contractors- none are interested in such a small job, one suggested 'I do it myself' which I plan to do.

Megavolt, you need to look at your own industry. No job should be too small.

"No job is too small" is on my adverts and website!
