customer wants 3 fluorescents in a garage to work off both a p.i.r (when door opens) and a switch can this be done or can he only have 1 or the other (existing power already there and all good)

think you'll have problems triggering florries with a PIR. a switch on the door might be a better idea.

Does he want the switch to override the PIR so he can keep the lights on whilst he is in the garage? seems a daft idea really, just put a limit switch on the door. Door opens lights on, door closes lights off simples

or limit switch on door and a manual switch in parallel so he can have lights on with door closed.

sorry should of said he uses the garage as a workshop as well, so wanted to override pir with switch with door shut

This is straightforward.
You can have the lights come on on a PIR and have a manual override switch that will turn the lights on permanently.
You have to remember that when you switch off the manual switch the PIR will take over so they will not go off at once.
Other options are possible.

still think florries on a PIR is a bad idea. them PIRs don't like it up 'em, mr. mainwaring.
