careful - there seems to be confusion as to the type of proving unit being discussed:

Is it a voltage proving unit for your voltage tester
or is it
a calibration proving unit to ensure your tester is working as it was when calibrated last.

Early posts seemed to be discussing the former whilst the later ones are discussing the latter.

The Dilog unit you are referring to is the latter.

Yes, proving unit is an essential piece of kit.

My thinking is that the proving unit is the known supply and therefore should be used prior to any testing, I understand the veiw that how do you know the proving unit is ok, but you could go round and round this till the coos come home

I've found I've never needed to use a proving unit as either I can meter the incoming tails (as mentioned above) or just do a 250v IR test on my voltage detector, don't see why I should spend £60+ when I don't need to...

Just to give my input, I wouldn't perform a safe isolation without my proving unit;I always use one.

you guys know my time is done on the tools now,but I remember how hard it was when I started,just glad I was able to help out a fellow sparky by letting him have a proving unit and lamp that I didn't need,at a fair price.It,s hard enough these days trying to find work these days and the cost of kit is ridiculous at times.

When I was an apprentice it was either a neon screwdriver or a lamp with two bits of wire,but mostly proved to be dead if the fuse was out,switched off or the lights went out.
