retro fit rcbo's

Had some rcbo's to retrofit to some dorman smith 3 phase db's earlier and it occurred to me as I was fighting past the other cables in the 72 way board that they are actually a nightmare to fit in a busy as heck board. Why they so bloody long?!?!

Of course it's going to be long, how else are you going to fit 72 ways into a DB

All the gubbins that does the trickery is in that long bit.

The long nose pliers were a godsend today!! It would make a difference if the previous sparks had tidied as they went along plus all the neutral flying leads were like a dogs dinner

I think it might contain a "flash chamber", as a firm (ECD) did peddle some RCBOs the same size as an MCB for a bit and the "flash chamber" was omitted to make them small. I seem to remember.

but seeing as all other RCBOs are that size, maybe it was a bad idea....

Still very much available by all the major manufacturers like ABB, MG etc, and used extensively in Europe. They are 1PH + N rather than true double pole....

Think the problem with these rcbo's is they don't normal fit onto a buss bar very well, so not very good for retro fitting into an existing mains, i've used them in the leisure side of electrics where you wire them up using panel wire so there are ok

I spoke to them last year and they're expecting type B in next month. So it's worth keeping an eye on them.

They would normally be fitted to a CU/DB with a DP (N-E) busbar, similar to what you would see on a 3 phase DB... Modern French and German domestic DB's, have such single phase arrangements as they make use of DP/1PH-N protective devices quite extensively...
