Humbug, I am gonnar work Christmas, retainer is just short of £200 just for sitting by the phone.

You mercenary Dave!
Everyday is Christmas to a believer so I agree with the views on commercialism, absolutely rediculous and just greed for the merchants (although that is what their trade is)
The main issue is the pressure put upon people who can not afford daily living let alone presents for people at Christmas. I certainly don't like to see the 'Bright house' and 'littlewoods' adverts that tell people to put Christmas on the never never!
Main thing about Christmas is 'that' day where everything is quiet, different from every other day (for the first cups hours anyway)
Think of lonely people at this time especially if the RCD keeps tripping during the Queens speech - DAVE CALLOUT - KERRRCHING!

I put my kids off Center Parcs for years,by telling them it was like Tweedies farm,on "Chicken Run"...truth is,they are well set up,and i hate to appear snobby, but the uncomfortable truth,is the cost raises the standard of most patrons...
We had a legendary break in the south of Scotland, which we had booked well in advance, and paid proper money for...we arrived to find the Glasgow edition of the "Sun" newspaper, had offered 7 day breaks, for a tenner :(

If you can imagine being on a Rab C Nesbit feature film set,for 7 days, with a free bar...marvellous

I still love Xmas, It's is probably the only day my phone doesn't ring. Personally, I think all shops should be forced to close over the festive period. When I was a nipper it seemed that the country came to a standstill for at least a week and nothing mattered apart from Christmas, it should go back to that way of life for me!!

Sadly we have created a society where everything needs to be done and sorted immediately in all aspects of life. I was chatting with the apprentice the other week and he couldn't believe that 20-30 years ago that If you rang a customer on the landline and they were not in the office that you had to wait until they returned to get a reply. I would love for it to go back to those days but I don't suppose it will. Take the forum as a great example if it goes down for 2 days due to technical issues, we are all running round like headless chickens lol ( Me included ) last time it happened there was an Handful of us that were that desperate for some instant conversation we joined the bloody plumbers forum just to try and find a familar face. Sadly technology as created a world full of zombies that can't function without it.
Well for me like every christmas it will be too much food, really bad old movies and a lot of sleeping and that's all i need.

PS @Dan whatever you do make sure the forum is healthy and running smoothly so I can get an instant response to anything I post

I love Christmas. Not religious, don't really care too much for the present giving or whatever but I don't live close enough to my family to see them as often as I'd like and it's always a great laugh when we get together, so always look forward to it.

I love what Christmas used to mean, these days its all about shopping and keeping up with the Jones's!
In my heart I like Christmas, I just wish there was less pressure, more festive fun, rest and pleasure.

Christmas was great when I was a kid, 4 kids in a bed, waking up early to loads of cheap presents, no iPhones, X boxes and the like. House full of relatives. Men went to the pub, while Mum's cooked the Xmas dinner. Watch the Queens speech on the tv, followed by the latest James Bond film (and it hadn't been out on DVD or Sky, cos they hadn't been invented). Followed by party games, and dancing (chalk dust spread on the floorboards), whilst the grown ups got sloshed. And it snowed proper at Xmas

Now nobody wants to travel, drink driving. Xmas dinner is nothing to get excited about, cos we had that last weekend, and we've seen the James Bond film in the summer.

Christmas is for kids, and big kids! Bah Humbug

I do miss when Christmas used to really mean something,
BIG family gathering at grandparents house
two big families 11 children total 6 adults,
And they cooked up a storm,
the roast diner was not to be believed
The Christmas table was two ping-pong table end to end
just amazing.
My Grandma was an amazing cook !
sadly missed.

I work in a lot of retail outlets and some of them have their Christmas stock delivered in August, it is so commercial but probably has been for years. We decided years ago to elbow presents between each other and just enjoy the day with a few family members. Thankfully at our place this year so I can hide in the kitchen doing the cooking so I can avoid small talk which I am hopeless at.

So, whats with the Snow falling, and the Santa hat at the top???
It's only half way through November. I am surprised I havn't seen any daft sod with Xmas decorations up yet, guess it won't be long. The supermarkets have already started, can we keep XMAS until it actually IS Xmas???
There should be a law against premature Xmas decorations or promotions, most people have had a gut-full of it by the time it comes round, IMO it's all a load of American sh!te.
It has lost all of its appeal anyway, in this day and age, hence the desperate attempts to build everyone up to a 2 day climax.......
Bet it's fun in your house on Crimbo, LOL

had a couple of wierd xmass's in the past. 1. sharing a can of beans and a packet of bonios with my dog. 2. working 12 hour night shifts at the toyota engine olant on deeside xmas eve and xmas day ( double time). these young 'uns don't know they been born with all the hype.

It is mate, it's fantastic. My kids come home and stay over, we have one real and two budding chefs in the family to cook a delicious spread, loads of booze and laughs, it's great and I look forward to it every year.....At Xmas, not half way through November. Its all the commercial sh1te that comes before it that I hate, it should be outlawed until December 20th.
