we tried norton 360. it virtually stopped the computer. get avg. free. less hassle and just as good. any new virus will bypass any anti-virus software anyway, untill it's updated. by which time it's too late.

One of the above should do the trick I currently have norton 360 seems ok no problems as of yet

Norton is the stuff that nightmares are made of. As Tel has said, get AVG and it’s free. :hurray:

I agree, I wouldn't pay for anti-virus. The free versions give you full protection, the paid versions just come with a whole load of unnecessary bloat.

You could also try Avast free version as well, it's as good as any other.

Yes Microsoft Security Essentials, works with Win 7, Vista and I believe also XP.

I use Norton 360 and have had no problems.

Disregard the Norton bashers - people who still dis Norton are living in the past.

Norton went through some years where it got bloated and lagged behind the competition, but it's back up near the top again in terms of protection and reasonable use of resources.

Now to your question:
You definitely don't want all three.

Norton Antivirus is just a basic (but very good) stand-alone antivirus.

Norton Internet Security (NIS) and Norton 360 are full security suites, which include antivirus, antimalware, and firewall.

Norton 360 has everything that NIS has, + additional features.

All the three are the part of Norton antivirus. Norton anti8virus slows down your computer speed so, in my opinion you should go with Avast, AVG or Kaspersky.

I beg to disagree I've used Symantec Endpoint protection and before that Symantec Anti-virus Corporate for more years than I care to remember (which is imho the grown ups version of the home pc software from Norton-lol) or AVG Free editions are very very good.

In reality all we can really do is stop the known virii as you will never stop the unknown (as they are unknown) but in fairness SEPC aletrs you to new or changed protocols as well and it aint that expensive!
And.... as long as your PC Runs OK thats fine
Also get yourself Malwarebytes AntiMalware
I use both every day and it suffices

regards

I use a package by ESET called NOD32 it's the nuts. You can try a free version too. I've used it for years, much better than the others!!

i use norton 360,it does slow the system down but mainly on start up while it updates etc, then its fine, never tried the free stuff but any virus that been blocked by norton has come from emails from mates using free antivirus software,id keep away from mcafee twice ive lost everything on my machine due to a virus even with updates, used norton now for 3 years not a pick of trouble, and the net minder for the kids pc is great emails you when the try a site or word you have blocked

I use McAfee on all the Windows machines I have. I find it very reliable and does not slow the machine down unless you have it set to do a full scan while you are trying to use it for real work.

Norton products have always caused me problems, not just performance but strange incompatibilities with other software.

I've tried AVG and Avast in the past but they are not as good as a commercial package.

As for M$oft being used for security - forget it - not on my PC's, its bad enough having to use Windows for an OS.

No need to buy anything these days. Comodo or avast for anti virus, adaware for malware protection and windows firewall is good enough.

Avoid getting any thing you listed, just get microsoft security essentials 2, its free and is at the moment the best free antivirus.

i agree with what has been said and any person who repairs them on a regular basis, you will find when removing norton and other bloated av software from clients machines the speed increase id considerable. I have to agree i use avg but have used avast and is a good, if you insis on buying a av then nodd 32 is very good but i also use crap cleaner and a few other programmes but generally if you dnt acept crap or go down loading from certain sectors of the net you wont get in to much trouble

I work in IT support (for over 120) companies and would advise against norton. I think it is over priced and is slow. Avg is also slow, but at least it has a free version.

Ms security essentials and windows defender should be fine for a home user.

Also, if you have win 7, turn on user access control and it should aid against installatiobs you haven't already agreed to.

Also, just be careful with opening emails and websites you are unsure of... No av product can protect you if you click on links and choose to download something that is bad.

Alternatively, replace windows with linux and then you are hardly ever likely to be hurt by a virus or malware infection...

UAC is on by default, unless you've disabled it I wouldn't worry. You need to be logged in as atrue administrator to alter these setting as well.

You may have no problems with Norton but you probably have got no protection either - it's products have gone down hill since Peter Norton sold out

I use Norton and I find it works well

What I find particuarly good is the automatic backup that I can schedule.
It backs up the PC to an external network hard drive at silly time of night and then switches the PC off

I really like the norton family security that keeps an eye on the kids

Linux? A pencil and paper has same result. Seriously... I use Norton Anti Virus on all 5 systems that I have and hevever had any problems with it. Great value for a 5 system license too.

I went off Norton a number of years ago and have tried a load of other anti-virus software since I would recommend:

avast - if you want free anti virus software that doesn't slow you down to much

kaspersky - is paid for but is very good and will not grind your PC to a halt

Used to spend all my time sorting out Windows 7 Blue Screens Of Death issues on a few forums.

Whenever anybody had a problem the usual advice would be to uninstall your current AV program (for now) and use Microsoft Security Essentials. This was because:
(a) Made by Microsoft,
(b) Lightweight and fairly unobtrusive,
(c) Not a resource hog and
(d) Never been known to cause Windows 7 to crash.

After you pc was sorted you could then re-load your fave flavour of AV.
Surprising the number of people who re-tried AVG and were back seeking help again within hours. They couldn't work out the connection between loading AVG and B.S.O.D'ing

The good guys (as of 3 months ago when I sort of fell off the help forums (too much work on!!)) were, in no order:
Kapersky.
MSE
(above).
ESET.
(my personal favourite).
Avast.
Trend Micro.

The (not so) bad guys were:
McAfee
PC Tools
Zone Alarm (Firewall)

The out and out uglies of the piece were, and still are as far as I'm aware:
AVG.
Symantec Norton. (Been crap ever since Mr. Norton sold it to Symantec).
Avira
Spyware Terminator

Also everybody was advised to download the free version of Malwarebyes' Anti-Malware. Update it weekly or more and run a weekly scan.

Malwarebytes' Free + Windows Firewall + Microsoft Security Essentials = Nirvana for the Windows 7 user!

Just my 2p's worth, from someone in the know. :smart:

Now, who's got a tin hat I can borrow?? :army:

its a moot point,
i use "avg" and "cc cleaner" and "spybot search and destroy"(all free)
i also use mozzilla firefox as my search engine, it has better security than internet explorer?
the worse thing i did was sighn up to talk talk broadband, the connection is total rubbish
i,m constanty having to switch off the modem then switch it back on to reconnect

A few years ago we had a program called Panda, twas flippin great but it seems to have disappeared. I've got a free version of McAfee on my laptop and I have to say I think it's a total piece of crap. We got it on a free when we had AOL as our provider and it didn't seem to work at all, we started having a few problems so I disabled it and ran an online scan which showed up a load of nastys.
Probably all down to our oldest son who was 17 at the time and spent most of his spare time looking at the naked lady sites

I also used to have a soft spot for the Panda free AV but I haven't tried it for several years now. I would give sandboxie another shameless plug, it's not anti-virus in the truest sense of the word but it's a very handy program.

Personally as long as you go for one of the big 'named' ones, it's a personal preference.

See, I'd have to disagree there. One of the big names is AVG. But when Windows 7 Hit the the screen, it had a new (for wont of a better word) algorithm in it's in-built security system. AVG sold there stuff as Windows 7 compliant, but it wasn't. It was exactly the same as for XP SP3. Totally unsuitable for seven.

A can of worms I could open here as many folks will say "well, I got 7 and AVG, no probs". All depends on what else you're running!

As a P.S. If you use the banking security program, of which I cannot remember the name, and your pc crashes, remove that first. Even that (wasn't) up to speed with Windows 7's in built self defence, as of 3 months ago.

Are they the same? Do i get all 3 or getting just one of them is enough?
As far Windows is concerned, use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is fast, free & has all the necessary protection. It can be downloaded for free for Windows 7, vista or xp. It is included in Windows 8 as Microsoft Defender.
