Got to 2nd fix an apartment this week, been fire damaged. There are about 30 other apartments on the complex and they have all had their consumer unit changed in the last few months by the housing association, they are RCBO boards, 5 circuits or so in each one, however no SPD's have been fitted to these new units.
We will fit a new consumer unit to match the others but do you think we should put an SPD in, firstly, there aren't any smoke detectors connected locally inside the apartment, each room has a central fire alarm head instead (personally I would put an aico in the hall and kitchen linked together as well as the main alarm but no other flats have these either).
Secondly, if I fit an SPD someone will clock it and say why isn't it in any other of the new boards and will prbably cause a big ruckus between us, the sparks, the management co and owners, we will probably get the blame as usual.
But do you think it really needs one? they are simple flats/apartments, don't think they are sheltered accomodation but there is staff on site and there is a nursing home on the complex across the road, no smoke detection is wired to the board so no safety circuits are installed, its just simple sockets and lights. Personally I don't think they do anything anyway, electonic goods are designed to fail just out of waranty anyway no matter how much care you take of them.
