Hello, my mate’s asked me to look at his spotlights in the kitchen because they were temperamental for a few months going off for hours at a time then coming back on and now they just trip the MCB as soon as switched on. They’re 12v spots.
They were on a dimmer switch so I changed that first to a standard switch but it still trips.
I assumed it was a transformer issue so I pulled a couple lights out until I found it and disconnected the mains from it keeping the live and neutral separated and then tried the switch, but it still tripped!
The cable feeding the tranny is a 2 core black sheath so I’m assuming it’s been wired to an existing ceiling rose or junction box.
The fault has to be between this and the switch but we can’t access them without a lot of messing about and because I’m not the best with spotlights anyway (can’t stand them) I was hoping someone might have some ideas? Am I right in thinking there is only one tranny? I’ll post some pics, cheers!

It's likely that there is a transformer for each light fitting based on the 65VA rating of that one. But without actually being on site and looking none of us could tell you for certain what is above that ceiling.

I would strongly recommend you get an electrician to sort this out as you are clearly guessing at what the fault is and potentially creating dangerous situations by doing so.

I think there is more than one transformer. The pic you have posted would feed 3 - 20 watt lamps or 1 - 50 watt lamp,so it depends on what wattage the lamps are as to how many transformers there are.

give me a pm.oil come over and fix it.

Ok cheers, the reason I thought there was one transformer is because All the lights were going off and sometime later coming back on, instead of it being localised to only certain lights
