Evening All.
Almost clear on connecting the genny to the house!
When connecting the genny it is recommended to link the neutral to earth in the socket of the connecting cable. Why? Is there any reason why the neutral to earth link shouldn't be at the back of the fixed plug on the box housing the plug and rcd?
Cheers
Pete

The 230VAC output from the genny is floating (normally). You have to tie one side down to earth, because the protecting RCD that you have to install won't trip if there's an earth fault.
There's a cable linking the output socket on the genny with the plug connection on the RCD box at the house. The question was about where to put the earth to neutral link. I've seen recommendations to put it at one end of the connecting cable in the output socket. What bothers me is that customers have a habit of losing cables and would probably replace it with one that has no E/N link in it.

The neutral link is normally placed in the socket so that the generator is returned to it's unmodified state when disconnected, you could place the link upstream and maybe label the generator to indicate this.
