Across the switch, stops the arcing of the switch and possibly slows the discharge on the choke - I think?

sometimes it's not ours to reason why, just as long as it works. did you use a R/C combined all in one thingy, or knock one up ?

The all in one(the larger one), fits ok with a bit of sleeving
