You gotta admit, that was a good answer.

You can stick tabs in to
the most relevant bits like tables etc, saves a bit of time flicking through pages.

Without wishing to cause offence to someone.....are you serious?? The 17th had got to be the most pee-take of exams going. You've got something like 4mins per question to look the answer up out of the book from the four possible options on the screen in front of you. My missus could do it. Come on. If this lad can't make the grade and he's even doing mocks, then maybe he's made the wrong career choice.

I know, I know, when I done the exam I used some tabs I explained this to the lad but it seems like he doesn't like doing this he thinks that it should be done with out the use of these colour sticky things hanging out of the book I found it helpful but there you go I thought that someone out there had a better system

Actually - I disagree. The index will only help you if you know what you're looking for to start with. The best way to 'learn' the BxB is to get to grips with where you find things section by section, and then use the contents. There's only seven sections plus appendices, not hard to grasp. 1 = fundamentals, 2 = definitions, 3 = what comes from outside, 4 = don't get bitten by it, 5 = how you wire it, 6 = how you test it, 7 = special locations.

Then, the meatier sections like 5 & 7 you just break down again into sub-sections, and so on.

By the time you have put enough sticky tabs on all the sections that you think are helpful, you may as well just use the index as it is quicker and less confusing than a rainbow of crap hanging out the top of your regs.
Even quicker than using the index is to learn the sections and where they sit in relation to each other.

Having said that, it's the easiest exam you will ever sit in relation to this profession and does not really need any special attention.

It gets worse mate, you can often discount 2 of the 4 choices immediately if you have half a brain so you've got a 50/50 chance of hitting lucky

Unless you know exactly here the answer is in the book, you need to use the index and the index alone, don't bugger about with the contents at the front. There's a key word in every question that you will be able to find in the index, go straight to it, find the answer, move on.

Very true, not all are quite so clean cut, but I'd say the majority are. It's not difficult, but I would recommend moving swiftly as you may soon run out of time, if you cannot find the answer in 30 seconds, flag it and move on.

i totally agree when I was doing the course in the collage there was a dude that had sticky tabs along the top,down the side and along the bottom it looked ridiculous I don't know how this could have been helpful it looked more confusing more than anything else

Remember that the questions in the exam are in order of the sections in the book so the first questions are about the first sections, middle questions about middles section and so on.
So you can just open the book near the front start the exam and turn over pages forward as you go on.

If you find your dining table is a bit wobbly you can shove it under the table leg that's causing the wobble.

MFTs make good door stops to stop the back door slamming in your lass's face when she's fetching the coal in.

I have a 17th edition mock exam app on my phone and I pass it every time I try it without even useing any regs, the first time I downloaded the app I was in pub after a mate told me about it and I tried it then and passed even though I had no regs books with me and I had also had a few pints, I really dont think he will have a problem with it mate, he is just worrying over nothing

Rubbish. There are key concepts all over the BGB which you will NOT find by using the index alone as they either don't appear using that wording or simply haven't cross referenced to start with. In fact, the index is sadly lacking in general IMO.

Besides, the whole point of sitting the exam is to show that you understand the subject, not that you are 100% reliant on looking stuff up. It's enough of a joke already.

your maths is not as good as your electrical knowledge. 60 questions in 2 hours is 2 minutes per. :willy_nilly:. even so, most of us can answer 40 or so without opening the book.

Yeah, I realised that I couldn't actually remember what the time allowed and no. of questions was whilst I was mid type, but for some reason I had four in my head and didn't check. My bad. Still doesn't change it from being a joke, though!!!

One of the lads on here posted up that he gave his daughter a brief overview of how the regs works then gave her a practice paper. She passed with a very limited electrical knowledge.
