I am aware that a lot of old switch gear contains asbestos where the old fuse wire carriers are inserted. I am curious as to what is the correct and safe method remove this. Is it necessary to call in an external contractor as i know they can be pretty pricey.

I'm very intrested in this subject especially with the amount of sparks dying each week due to asbestos. Which swich gear should I be warey of?

Technically yes, however many dont.

Well wasn't planning on smashing it up but at some point in time the old fuses/boards will need to be replaced with MCBs/RCBO's. What happens to the units?

12345aob - need to look out for little pieces of cloth looking substance behind old ceramic re-wireable fuses. Old iron Bill consumer units are rife with the stuff.

To dispose of this stuff properly as per hse it is a military operation ,tents clean rooms ,shower room and to get in approved contractor will be really expensive i think you have to respect the stuff appropriate mask sure these are ffp2 white suit gloves special asbestos hoover double bag any asbestos material ie arc shields tend to be of a cement type asbestos which is not as dangerous to remove. and the type in fuse holders this is known as serpentinus or something this is most likely to cause problems as this is made up of looseish fibres this is same as the type in the end of old resistor banks once removed any materials double bag also suits gloves and mask then wrap up with asbestos tape and were i work we have an asbestos skip so i am sure you guys would be able to arrange a company to collect cheaper than contractors hope this helps a bit long winded but there you go, best way i could explain.

now i am very worried, and didnt know this.

ive come across these fuses before with the piece of cloth behind the fuse wire.

what part is asbestos??? the white cloth?? the holder in the fusbox?? or the piece you hold in your hand to put the fuse in thats a sort of ceramic.

im still shocked by this as im always really carful around this deadly stuff.

knipex the white cloth is definitly asbestos the ceramic part of holder not so sure i was talking about arc shields in old contactor panels but they look of similar materials but not sure if so not as worrying as these are compact and held together just take caution when working with the white cloth piece i have a file somewhere in work regarding identifying asbestos i will look out and post.
