I am currently carrying out a PIR on a large commercial garage. There are 6 old 3 phase boards, 2 of which I have tested without problem (english electric red spot) but upon unscrewing and opening the doors on the others they have turned out to be the type with the white woven asbestos pads at the back of the fuses. After realising they were a bit crumbly, I thought better of disturbing them, and have told the owner of the premises to see about getting the asbestos removed.

Would it be acceptable for me to then return at a later date and insert something else as a flash guard? Is there a product available for this purpose?

Replacing the boards would be a pain in the **** in a few of the cases as multiple armoured cables enter from all sides, with the DBs half enclosed in the walls (which is either clad with asbestolux or supalux). It's believed the building dates from about 1970, and was originally a factory- yet the owner has not got an asbestos register :-(

first thing to do is inform owner you suspect Asbestos and dont go back till theres a report/register in place (check with the asbestos contractor as to what they have done) if they dont have a register just now possibly they might just get a bit of paper ) and I fink its new dbs allround

As for removing the woven flash gaurds you may find the asbestos contractor requests attendance of electrician to remove fuses, isolate dbs
