A house conversion to convert the basement into a flat has a timber joist ceiling and concrete screed floor.

How do you guys wire a basement? One person mentioned running socket cables from the ceiling is bad as the cable run isn't expected, so make channels/ducts in the floor. If so, any best practices to follow?

This relates to power, phone, cat6, satellite coax. Keeping high voltage away from the phone/cat6/sat cables would be a pain as ducts can only be made in the room perimeters.

no brainer mate
keep it real and go simple way of ceiling down! then all your wires can be boarded in when ceiling is installed!

p.s that one person needs to read the regs!

horizontal and vertical runs are perfectly fine! just not diagonal!

What was this other guy on??
Permitted zones are permitted zones.
If the basement was upstairs he might have a very small point, but even then if you want to go up to the loft and then down with your cable routes there would be no reason why you couldn't.

Another plus of wiring "down" is that if and when the cellar gets wet, at least the wiring will be some way off the floor!

What would you do if wiring a normal ground floor with solid floor? I bet you woudn't be chasing the floor out then.

Drop down to sockets the accross if its makes it easier/uses less cable.

Is there any issue with running cables next to the radiator pipes in the floor ducts/channels?

The guy that mentioned about not running the sockets form the ceiling said someone might hang up a picture and nail a cable. home usage vs safe zones then.

don't run with the pipes, make your own holes following part A of building regs, as far as picture nails are concerned the safe zone extends up, down and across from switches and sockets so no one should be nailing or screwing in line with any switch, socket or fitting of any kind, i sugest you buy a copy of a book called "an electricians guide to the building regulations" its all in there.
