autocad has many different versions so be careful you select the right version, there are free alternatives but you might end up with errors using them

QCAD hasnt been mentioned.
I run it here on Linux - excellent, as with all CAD programs, it isnt easy to use at first, but when you get the idea behind it, it is great.
£25ish.
Reads and writes to most CAD formats, and keeps the formatting correct. It has a good user support, with bug fixes fixed quickly - the beauty of open source.
