Hey, a local Chinese takeaway that my pal works in has called and asked if I can wire in a new deep fat fryer. They are also asking for a certificate. I haven't seen the job yet but if it's just as simple as connecting a cooker (which I can't see why it wouldn't be) how can I give them a certificate? Is there a specific appliance test sheet I've never seen before? Or should I simply use a minor works and in the description etc just state it's for connecting an appliance?

thanks in advance

You need to look first. It may need a new circuit, it may be three phase, and it may not be NEW. Food takeaways are notorious for misrepresentation .(to be polite ) Go and look and be synical.

I'm assuming you're talking about a commercial deep fryer and not some half-baked domestic table-top things in which case the fryer will require its own 3-phase circuit. It's not uncommon to see fryers requiring a 60A 3-phase supply which depending on the installation could need a 10mm 5 core cable.

I'd also suggest you'd need to commission the appliance which means checking the calibration and the Hi-limit safety facilities etc as well as the usual circuit tests. If you have no experience in this type of work then just walk away rather than getting into something that's outside your skill-set.

If I was connecting onto a existing isolator I would be doing a minor works for that circuit to make sure it complies with the load of the item. Of course as said before, if it's in a take away 9 times out of 10 your looking at a high load 3 phase appliance.

More than likely the existing cable will be like an oily eel with the insulation coming away like melted chocolate be wary and dont expect a easy job although I hope to be wrong

I might have misunderstood but I thought it sounded like an entirely new circuit installation. If it's just a like-for-like appliance replacement then it may be a lot more straight forward.

I would'nt worry about it.
When you put your price in it will be way to much and the offer of free food will raise it's head.

Run.

Run far and run fast...

Cheers guys, as I said I haven't seen it yet. I'm having a look at it tomoz. Thanks for the replies

As advised I ran away. They wanted me to connect a three phase fryer to a greasy 6.0mm twin that also ran to another couple of machines before entering an isolator at the other side of the kitchen. Haha :-/

There's no shame in walking (or running) away from this kind of installation, at least you'll still be able to get a good nights sleep if or when the place burns down in the future. Hopefully you explained to them the installation is dangerous.

Just orders tape for my p touch this week, and it was £15 from my local "valleys"
stationers !!! Used to be about £10.
I Still bought it though lol

From my experience as soon as you enter the Chinese restaurant it falls outside the reach of the BS7671 and usually runs to regulations often found as the basis of a shanty town, its a quirk of time and space that means the inside of the building dosn't actually exist within the confines of british soil....

This can often be seen to have strange effects on anyone who enters the building having a strong urge to develope a Chinese accent.... beer will often weaken your resistance to these urges but as long as you don't spend too long in the building the effects normally wear off within half a hour after exiting.

Oops, wrong thread.
But as Marvo said, just walk away if you havnt the experience, I walked away from a kebab shop that was tripping out, and found one of the 40 amp circuits was going to the Indian take aways next door, both rented from the same landlord. And both spoke less English than a 3 year old child, neither wanted me to investigate further,I only popped in to get a bit of grub, and as soon as they saw a vda screwdriver in my pocket, they wanted me to take a look at the voodoo electrics they had going on.
sometimes you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I suggested the power be turned off, which didn't go down to well. And to speak to the landlord.
I had a maccy D's after, but my conscious played hell with me.
I was out of my depth
Gn3 was didn't tell about this lol

As they say, wen your in a hole, stop digging.

Well it works , don't it?

Sadly this is all to common and despite well intentioned advice and explanation and the ever present language barrier real or affected you are well and truely up against it to make any difference to the safety of this type of establishment, and on the other hand I look after a few retail shops owned and run by non immigrant people who are constantly being visited by HSE and EH officers with the latest requirements that they MUST implement immediatley on pain of being shut down, fined etc the latest is that they must not use fairy or any other washing up liquid that is not on the approved detergents list, can you imagine them trying to explain that to the local curry shop proprietors lert alone pursuing it to the point of a prohibitation notice ? No neither do I

Trust me ive ventured into 3 takeaways to help out and what i see is sickly ... i grassed 2 up ...not right when u see rat crap on the prep tables and no hot water or adequate toilet facilities .... sometimes u have to just shop them in to the H&S

Seen far worse Indian curry houses than i have Chinese restaurants, both in the UK and overseas. Both of them, need constant visiting watchful eyes by local authority departments to keep standards of health and hygiene to any reasonable levels!!

At least you know your getting Dog over there many questions are been asked of our takeaways over here as the Ham topping has been found not to be ham in 9/10 takeaways in some cities...

Responses of been against there religion to handle ham is no longer cutting it as they have been instructed that it must contain Ham if so advertised and given ham topped pizza is the nations favourite it has left alot of takeaways in a very awkward position but to be honest i think the authorities are right .. .. if a food product is against your beliefs to handle or make then dont bloody make it to start with as appose to cheating the customer with flavoured chicken etc.... its a danger to those who have intolerances to certain foods.

As usual the response from said takeaways is the authorities are not taking their religious beliefs into consideration..... Ill end this post here before i express my views and im not a racist in any way just believe its time that we stopped tip-toeing around a certain belief and ensure that the same laws we all have to obey is implemented in full across the board regardless of religion!

Nah ill say what you dont want to **** religion sone people are allergic and they shouldnt be misselling it because it can kill them.

Religion has nothing to do with it, it's about maximising profit

Yes Shanks initially religion had nothing to do with it but by the nature of the issue it has now become a very tender point as as a large proportion of pizza sales from takeaways is from curry shops as part of a full range menu..

A large number of takeaways have been officially warned and have stopped the scam meat trade but a stink is been kicked up by those owners who have been put in a position where they will either have to stop selling ham topped pizza's (the nations biggest seller) or handle a product their religion won't let them do... Catch 22 ... my point was - the law was already there about making false claims on the actual content and they have gone into the business of selling it through a lie and when they are caught they complain its against their beliefs and the authorities should take this into account..... leaving my exiting point that the Law applies across the board regardless they knew they were breaking the law so accept it and stop selling it if it offends them.

A local pizza and curry shop near me has lots of ham topped pizzas, and a small note at the bottom of the menu board.

*all our ham is turkey

You're more likely to see Korean restaurants dishing up Dog than the Chinese!! lol!!

Think anyone ordering a Pizza from a curry house or a Chinese need there head testing, Pizza's are like fish & chips, NEVER but never, buy either from an Asian owned or based outlet! They can't cook them, they just don't taste the same!!

I dont do take outs i make my own curries etc and even have family with a order list for them lol .... never get paid owt though!

It doesn't comply if they advertise as ham topping .... they are trying to get around it with small print --- grass the up its called false advertising you cant say ive got a 2 bedroom house for sale then in small print at the bottom say the second bedroom is really a cupboard!

Very tired at the end of a very long day I went into a chippy and asked what sounds like a very stupid question...

Are your chips vegetarian?

I got the rolled eyes and ... "Theys made fae tatties wha dya think?"

"what are they cooked in?"

"Beef dripping"

:banghead::banghead:

I don't do Curries full stop, never have never will!! lol!! I like to taste the ingredients i'm eating not just the curry powder, or chillies etc!! lol!! So i've alway prefered Chinese restaurants over Indian and other cultural restaurants that use hot spicy chillies etc to mask the taste of the actual ingredients.

Chillies are an art you get tolerant to them and the flavours come back through with tolerance ... if you go above your level you just can't enjoy the dish ... im an avid hot dish freak ... got the ghost chilli sat on my herb rack which is several orders hotter than your curry hole.. admittedly only for the brave and a few pints pre-empt, oh any i forgot to wash the hands after prep and the tinkle to the toilet was one very painful experience indeed .

I enjoy a Nando's every now and then extra hot with extra extra hot side sauce and now find this mild... our lass gets curry sweats on the mild lol

I'm partial to spicy stuff myself :)

Although nandos in this neck of the woods comes in bottled form.

Sauce and marinade

I'm a chili lover too. Don't really go a day where I don't put hot sauce of some description on something. Vindaloo usually leaves me cold though...all heat and no taste. A local place does a very good phaal though, very hot but heaps of flavour too.
My hot sauce of choice lately has been some Bajan pepper sauce brought back for me from the Bahamas. It's a mix of scotch bonnets, onions, turmeric, and vinegar. Really tasty !
