Basically as above, trying to get through to the technical team who supplied the hood but they aren't open until 10.30am so if anyone has come across this before would appreciate an opinion. I fitted the controler which came with the fan and its getting warm to the touch. The fans pulling 3.1a, the controller is rated to 6a and its fed via a 5a fuse in a fcu.

Couple of questions,
What is the canopy extracting?
How close is the controller to any heat source?

It's extracting over an electric griddle/hot plate. Think just solved it, re-read the manufacturing instructions and they tell us the aluminium faceplate acts as a heatsink so is warm under normal operating conditions. Learn something new everyday. Might just give them a ring when they open to confirm though.

Most fan controllers would get fairly warm internally under normal conditions. Usually if it's not too hot to touch with your hand or fingers
and it doesn't smell like hot plastic or paint from 6 inches away then it's not an issue. Component internal temperatures for diacs and power transistors can be over 150°C and their external temps can be way over 100°C when under load. Make sure all the packing like bits of styrofoam and cardboard which might restrict air flow has been removed, if they're using the faceplate as a heatsink then check it doesn't have any of that sneaky plastic film on it like you get on cellphone LCD screens when they're new, sometimes you can't even see that stuff until it starts peeling with age.
